It's easy to turn an old waste vinyl record into a pretty bowl! This craft can be used to store various things in it, and can also serve as a great gift.

Steps

  1. 1 Get out a cheap, useless vinyl record. Don't take what doesn't belong to you. Better check thrift stores for old, inexpensive records.
  2. 2 Preheat oven to 100-120 degrees Celsius. Provide good ventilation in the kitchen.
  3. 3 Place about 200 grams of dry beans in a flax or muslin bag. Tie the pouch so that the inside of the beans is somewhat loose. Alternatively, you can use a jar of canned vegetables (it has a flatter bottom).
  4. 4 Set the oven rack to a low heat setting. The bowl should form as close to the center of the oven as possible.
  5. 5 Place a heatproof bowl in a larger saucepan to stabilize. Place the pot on a baking sheet.
  6. 6 Center the plate carefully over the bowl. Place the bean bag in the center of the plate. You can also use a jar of canned vegetables to create a flatter bottom. Keep an eye on the process so that the bottom remains centered.
  7. 7 Place the structure in the oven. Watch the process carefully, as all the plates begin to melt at different times. This usually takes 4-8 minutes.
  8. 8 Remove the structure from the oven (remember to wear gloves) when you notice the beginning of melting. You will have a few seconds to correct the angle of the bottom and the overall shape of the bowl. That is why it is necessary to closely monitor how the plate begins to melt.
  9. 9 Place your plate in another bowl and shape it over it, or you can do it by hand. At times, you may like the look that the plate naturally took in the oven. In this case, skip the shaping step.
    • Here you can give free rein to creativity. Put on leather gloves (the record is hot), do not drop the record. You can pull some of the folds towards the center to make the bowl look like a flower or whatever comes to your mind.
  10. 10 Let the creation cool for 10-15 minutes.
  11. 11 Flip the finished bowl over as expected and enjoy your craft.

Method 1 of 2: Bend the Edges Down Method

  1. 1 Get out a cheap, useless vinyl record. Don't take what doesn't belong to you.Better check thrift stores for old, inexpensive records.
  2. 2 Preheat oven to 100-120 degrees Celsius.
  3. 3 Place the plate in the center of an upside-down saucepan or metal bowl. Place the structure on a baking sheet.
  4. 4 Place the baking sheet in the oven. Watch the process carefully, as all the plates begin to melt at different times. This usually takes 4-8 minutes.
  5. 5 Remove the structure from the oven (remember to wear gloves) when you notice the beginning of melting.
  6. 6 Place your plate in another bowl and shape it over it, or you can do it by hand. At times, you may like the look that the plate naturally took in the oven. In this case, skip the shaping step.
  7. 7 Let the creation cool for 10-15 minutes.
  8. 8 Turn the finished bowl over as expected.

Method 2 of 2: Bend the Edges Up Method

  1. 1 Find a glass bowl that is only slightly smaller than the plate.
  2. 2 Preheat oven as above.
  3. 3 Place the plate on the bowl and center.
  4. 4 Place the bowl with the plate in the oven and center the canned food on the plate.
  5. 5 Watch carefully as the record begins to sink into the bowl. If the edges of the plate begin to curl over the bowl, the canned food is underweight or you need a larger bowl. If you don't want to start over, or just need a deeper bowl, you can gently try to apply a little pressure to the center.
  6. 6 Remove everything from the oven when you are satisfied with the depth and shape of the bowl.
  7. 7 Let cool, turn over properly, and prepare for delicious exclamations.
  8. 8 Place a napkin in a bowl.
  9. 9 Add your favorite treat and enjoy!

Tips

  • During the summer months, when it is very hot, you can put the metal bowl out in the sun to warm it up. Then place a plate on top of it and leave it on for 10-15 minutes (depending on how hot it is outside). Form a bowl around a metal bowl and bring it home to cool. No smells and no heat in the kitchen!
  • An empty metal can filled with beans can be used as a load.
  • You can decorate the bowl with glitter.
  • In a bowl, you can serve dry foods (popcorn, nuts), after placing a paper napkin in it.
  • You can melt the plate without an oven, for example, with a building hair dryer. Wear heat-resistant gloves (such as those used for oven baking), use a metal molding bowl, a rotating stand, and the help of a friend. Use the building hair dryer in a well-ventilated area.

Warnings

  • Be sure to keep an eye on the plate while it is in the oven. Vinyl melts at very low temperatures and can easily ruin your oven if you forget about the vinyl!
  • Do not use these bowls for food, especially hot food (not even popcorn). Vinyl is not food grade and may contain harmful chemicals.
    • Most vinyl records are recycled rubber / plastic products of the same type. When heated, toxins are released from them.
  • Work in a well ventilated area. Open the windows and turn on the hood.
  • Fresher records may simply straighten out, rather than begin to bend in your oven, due to the plastic content in them. It is best to use old records.
  • Modern vinyl records are made from a vinyl polymer made up of chlorine monomers like polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Substances differ only in additives used in production. Vinyl chloride is known as a carcinogen that can be released when heated (citation) along with the phthalate plasticizers contained in the plates. The release of these substances upon heating leaves behind both a physical precipitate and a gas.It is recommended that you do not use your oven, which you are using for cooking, to heat the plates frequently, as harmful substances can accumulate on the inner walls of the oven. The toxicity level from a single use of the oven for such crafts is low, but the constant use of the oven for this purpose can cause cancer (citation).
  • Do not leave canned food in the oven for too long, as it can explode from heat, if you want, open canned food beforehand to relieve pressure.
  • The vinyl will be hot when you take it out of the oven. Be careful!
  • Do not take vinyl records that you accidentally find at home without permission, as many records can serve as a source of sentimental memories to people. It will be safer to ask permission or, as noted above, try to buy an old record from a thrift store.
  • Always wear gloves when using a hot oven.
  • If you plan on using a bowl for non-food liquids, protect your furniture by sealing the hole in the bowl with duct tape after it has completely cooled and hardened. Stick the tape only on the outside of the bowl.
