You probably know that leggings are not only an accessory for ballerinas. They can significantly add elegance to your winter outfit. Instead of buying ready-made ones, we suggest that you try to make leggings yourself from old things or from those bought in second-hand.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: How to make seamless leg warmers

  1. 1 Find an old sweater. If you don't have a sweater to cut into pieces, you can find similar ones in second-hand shops for up to 300 rubles.
    • Choose wool sweaters for extra durability, but hand wash to avoid damaging the texture.
    • If you will not wash your clothes regularly, choose acrylic. Acrylic fabrics deteriorate from frequent washings.
    • If you are looking for easy care and high durability, choose cotton.
  2. 2 Cut off the sleeves of the sweater with fabric scissors. Select the part just below the shoulder seam. You can use the leftovers from the sweater in the future for other crafts.
  3. 3 Place the sleeves on a work bench or any flat surface. Smooth them out so that no wrinkles remain.
  4. 4 Use a square to trim the gaiters.
  5. 5 Try them on. You can wear them stretched or folded. If you need shorter leggings, you can cut off most of the sleeve.
  6. 6 Use a pin to make the leg warmers fit tighter at the top if you want to wear them like knee-highs or stockings.

Method 2 of 3: How to sew leg warmers

  1. 1 Find a long-sleeved wool, cotton, or acrylic sweater. You want a sweater with cuffs at the bottom of the sleeves and at the body. Buy it second-hand or use an old one you already have.
  2. 2 Cut the sleeves along the shoulder seam. Use fabric scissors to avoid unraveling the threads.
  3. 3 Cut off the bottom cuff of the sweater. The leftovers can be thrown away or used for other crafts.
  4. 4 Lay the sleeves on a flat surface. Cut off the top of the sleeve at armpit level.
  5. 5 Using a sewing meter, measure the circumference of your leg under the knee or at the height of the point at which you want to wear the leg warmers. Subtract 2.5 to 5 centimeters to make sure they sit tight enough.
    • The fabric of the sweater stretches pretty well.
  6. 6 Cut two lengths from the cuffs. These will be used to double the top of your gaiters.
  7. 7 Load your sewing machine with a thread that matches the sweater.
  8. 8 Connect the edges of the cuffs so that you get a ring, and secure with a hairpin in this position. One side should already be sewn on, the other will need to be cut off. Repeat the same for the second piece.
  9. 9 Sew a vertical line joining the edges of the hem.
  10. 10 Use hairpins to pin the outside of the hem to the inside of the sleeve. You need to attach it carefully so that you do not sew the rings together later.
  11. 11 Sew neatly along the circumference. Use fine stitches and stitching to keep the leg warmers lasting as long as possible.
  12. 12 Sew on the edges of the cuffs. Attach buttons, ribbons or any other decoration from the outside of the gaiters at the seam. Wear on bare feet, over leggings or shoes.
    • Instead of sewing on the edges of the cuffs on your leg warmers, you can place the elastic on the inside of the leg warmers.

Method 3 of 3: How to make faux fur leggings

  1. 1 Find a fluffy, pleated fabric at your local textile store. Any kind of synthetic faux fur will work just as well.
  2. 2 Buy 1m of fabric. You can use a smaller amount if you want to make the socks short, covering only the shoes.
  3. 3 Measure using a sewing meter.
    • Measure the circumference of the top of your lower leg, just below the knee. Add 2.5 cm to this figure so that the elastic is not too tight in the end.
    • Measure the widest part of your calves.
    • Measure the lower leg. If you are going to wear different types of shoes, use a circumference of 56 cm.
    • Measure the length of your leg from your ankle to the top of your lower leg.
  4. 4 Cut off two pieces of fabric. They should be as wide as your leg length and as long as the widest part of your calves. Add 1 - 2 cm, keeping in mind the seams.
  5. 5 Place the resulting fabric pieces on a flat surface with the inside out. Measure out three ankle-length horizontal lines, the middle of the lower leg, and the top, below the knee.
  6. 6 Attach three elastic bands along these lines. If you are unsure of the accuracy of your measurements, sew the top and bottom sections closer together to make the leg warmers fit tighter.
  7. 7 Sew on the elastic, stretching as you sew.
  8. 8 Fold the fabric in half. Sew the two pieces as close to the edge as possible.
    • Cover the seam with fur.
    • You can also try sewing with a sewing machine, but you will most likely have to sew the middle yourself.
    • If you are using synthetic fabric, there is no need to hem the hem.
  9. 9 Repeat the same for the second piece. Wear over tights or shoes.
