If you have fine, straight hair, then curls will not last more than a few hours. Preparing your hair with a special curling cream is a good start. When you have curled your hair, let it cool and then secure it with hairspray and it will last throughout the day.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Start with dry hair

  1. 1 Start with hair that you haven't washed for a day or two. When you wash your hair, natural oils are rinsed off your scalp to add texture and hold your hair just like lipstick or gel. If your hair is not washed for one day, curls will be more difficult to form, since it is natural oils that help maintain the hairstyle.
    • If it's too late and you've already washed your hair, you can still use this method. Blow dry your hair or wait until it is completely dry before doing anything.
  2. 2 Add texture to the hair. To do this, there are several products that will help keep curls for more than 1-2 hours. Try one or more of the following over the entire length of your hair:
    • Dry shampoo. It works especially well if your hair looks a little greasy at the roots. Sprinkle it over your roots, wait a minute, and then comb your hair from roots to ends.
    • Curl shaping cream. Apply some cream (about the size of a small dime, depending on the length of your hair) and comb your hair from roots to ends to spread the product evenly through your hair.
    • Gel or lipstick. If you don't have a curl cream, a hair gel or pomade will work. Use a small amount as these products weigh heavily on your hair.
  3. 3 Cover your hair with hairspray. This will also give them texture. Spray a low to medium hold spray, holding the bottle a few centimeters from the hair, and then comb the hair from roots to ends so that it is evenly coated.
    • Do not use a strong hold hairspray as it is designed to hold hair in place and will give it a hard and brittle look.
  4. 4 Curl your hair. Now that your hair is ready, use a curling iron, hot curler, or other curling device to shape your curls. Even if you have fine and straight hair, if you prepare it correctly, you should be able to form curls. Here are some things to try:
    • Beach waves
    • Spiral curls
    • Big, soft, sexy curls
  5. 5 Pin your curls. Once you have curled all your hair, curl each section and pin at the roots. Wait for your hair to cool completely and then loosen the curls.
  6. 6 Finish up by covering your hair with hairspray. Use a medium hold spray and spray onto your hair after loosening it. For a more natural look, fluff your hair with your fingers before applying the hairspray, or if you want the curls to be stiffer, apply the hairspray without touching your hair.

Method 2 of 2: Start with wet hair

  1. 1 After washing your hair, do not use conditioner. Conditioner makes your hair silky smooth, and if you want curls, your hair needs to be whiter, coarse and dry. If the hair is too smooth, the curls will not stick. After shampooing your hair, rinse off the shampoo, but do not apply conditioner.
  2. 2 Apply curl shaping cream. It is actually made for people with curly hair, but is also great for people with straight hair if you want to curl it. Use a small dime-sized amount (depending on the length of your hair). Comb your hair from roots to ends to distribute the product evenly.
    • If you don't have a curl cream, use a gel or mousse instead.Use a small amount to keep your hair from getting too heavy. Too much will cause the curls to straighten.
  3. 3 Form curls. There are many methods for forming curls from wet hair without using heat. You can achieve shiny and thin curls without a curling iron, and it only takes a little time. Try one of the following common methods:
    • Curls with hairpins
    • Curls with a sock cheesecake
    • Curls using an old t-shirt
  4. 4 Let your hair dry completely. Regardless of which curling method you choose, your hair should be dry in the end. You can speed up the process by blow-drying the pinned curls. You can also shape your hair before bed and it will be dry in the morning.
    • Loosen one curl to check if your hair is dry. If the curl is still damp inside, secure it back and wait a few more hours, then check again.
  5. 5 Loosen your curls. Take out the bobby pins, strips of T-shirt, or socks that you used to curl your curls. Do not brush your hair, as the curls will fall apart immediately.
  6. 6 Finish up by covering your hair with hairspray. Use a medium to strong hairspray and spray onto your hair to keep it looking all day. Try not to touch your hair, as this can cause curls to fall apart.

Tips

  • If the curls do not stick to the ends of the hair, they may need to be trimmed. Damaged, split ends do not hold the curls well.

Warnings

  • Do not use curling irons on wet hair as the heat will burn your hair.
