Baking soda is a key ingredient in many dental products. It is an inexpensive way to whiten teeth, kill germs, and remove stains from teeth. Try mixing regular toothpaste with baking soda, or make a toothpaste or scrub for your teeth.

Steps

Method 1 of 4: Add baking soda to regular toothpaste

  1. 1 Mix toothpaste and baking soda. In a small bowl, mix half a teaspoon of baking soda with the amount of toothpaste you would normally apply to your toothbrush. Stir until smooth. Apply the mixture to your toothbrush.
  2. 2 Brush your teeth thoroughly. Brush your teeth thoroughly for two minutes, covering the entire mouth. Spit out excess toothpaste. Rinse your mouth with water.
  3. 3 Buy a toothpaste that contains baking soda. Alternatively, purchase a toothpaste that already contains baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). Since baking soda has been used in dentifrices for over 150 years and is relatively inexpensive, it is present in most major brands of toothpaste in varying amounts. Choose a toothpaste with a high concentration of sodium bicarbonate (such as Paradontax toothpaste).

Method 2 of 4: Make your own toothpaste

  1. 1 Combine glycerin, peppermint oil, salt, and baking soda. Mix three teaspoons of vegetable glycerin with three drops of peppermint oil. Add half a teaspoon of salt and five teaspoons of baking soda. Mix the ingredients thoroughly until smooth.
    • More peppermint oil can be added if desired.
  2. 2 Apply the mixture to your teeth. Cover your toothbrush with homemade toothpaste. Brush your teeth for a full two minutes. Then rinse your mouth thoroughly.
  3. 3 Store your toothpaste properly. Get a squeezable plastic tube or bottle to store your homemade toothpaste (such as a travel bottle). Or store your toothpaste in a small jar with a lid. Use a small plastic spoon to apply the toothpaste to the toothbrush, and do not dip the toothbrush into the jar (this can spread germs).
  4. 4 Make a bentonite clay toothpaste. Another homemade toothpaste option is a recipe where bentonite clay and baking soda are the key ingredients. Combine the following ingredients and stir until smooth:
    • 3/8 cup soft coconut oil (not liquid)
    • 1/4 cup baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon bentonite clay
    • half a teaspoon of salt;
    • 5-7 drops of peppermint essential oil.

Method 3 of 4: Make a paste with baking soda and lemon juice

  1. 1 Mix baking soda and lemon juice. Add two to three tablespoons (30–40 grams) of baking soda to a small bowl. Add a few drops of lemon juice immediately, stirring until a paste forms. Baking soda will help remove stains from the surface of your teeth, while lemon juice will help whiten your teeth.
  2. 2 Apply the paste. Pat the saliva off your teeth with a paper towel. Apply generously to dry teeth with a toothbrush and leave to absorb. Make sure the mixture covers all your teeth and never swallow it.
  3. 3 Leave the paste on for a minute and then wash off. Keep the paste on your teeth for one minute by turning on a timer on your phone or stopwatch. After that, rinse your mouth out immediately to prevent the acid from the lemon juice from damaging your tooth enamel. Be sure to completely rinse the paste off your teeth.
  4. 4 Alternatively, use water instead of lemon juice. For a gentler option, use water instead of lemon juice when making a paste. Mix the paste in the same way, using the same amount of baking soda and liquid. Leave the paste on for three minutes instead of one, as this mixture is not acidic enough to damage the enamel.

Method 4 of 4: Make a Strawberry Teeth Scrub

  1. 1 Mix the ingredients. Strawberries help break down plaque and remove stains from the surface of the teeth. Place two to three large strawberries in a small bowl and mash with a fork. Add 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon baking soda. Mix thoroughly until smooth.
  2. 2 Apply strawberry scrub to your toothbrush. Gently spread the mixture over all your teeth, but do not rub vigorously. Leave it on for 5-10 minutes and then rinse your mouth thoroughly with water.
  3. 3 Make a quick version of the scrub. If you're in a hurry or want to make an alternative, simply cover your teeth with strawberries and baking soda. Cut off the tip of a large strawberry and dip it in baking soda. Rub into teeth for an added anti-stain effect.

Tips

  • Use a mouthwash after your baking soda treatment to get rid of the taste in your mouth.
  • Do not brush your teeth too vigorously to avoid damaging the enamel.
  • Do not use baking soda to clean your teeth if you are wearing braces or a permanent retainer, or it will break down the orthodontic adhesive.
