Most modern ovens are equipped with a lock to avoid various accidents in the kitchen. Although the user is usually in control of the process, the oven is automatically locked during the self-cleaning process. It can be unlocked in several ways, however, it is important to note that each manufacturer provides a slightly different procedure.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Unlocking the oven control panel

  1. 1 Find the control panel. It is usually located on the top of the oven. Press the Panel Lock, Lock, or Lock Control button. Hold it for three seconds.
  2. 2 Wait for a beep to indicate that the panel is unlocked. Typically, the display will show “Locked” if the oven is still closed.
  3. 3 Press other key combinations if there is no dedicated Lock key. A common combination is to press the Cancel and Hold buttons simultaneously for three seconds.
  4. 4 Repeat the procedure to lock or unlock the control panel.

Method 2 of 3: Unlock after self-cleaning

  1. 1 Wait for the self-cleaning cycle to finish. Wait another hour or two for the oven to cool down. Most self-cleaning ovens will not allow themselves to be opened until they have cooled down.
  2. 2 Look at the display. If you still see Blocked and Cooling down, the cooling process is not complete. It's best to wait until it's over.
  3. 3 Try clicking the Cancel button to stop the self-cleaning process. Note that this will still require cooling before unlocking.

Method 3 of 3: Unlocking manually

  1. 1 Unplug the oven from the electrical outlet. If your oven does not unlock after self-cleaning, the temperature sensor may be damaged. Unplug the oven for a few minutes and plug it back on, you can reset these controls.
  2. 2 Check if the top of the oven can be removed by unscrewing it from the outside. Some older models have screws on the front and sides that hold the oven together. Unscrew them and lift the top of the oven to access the lock.
    • Wear gloves if the oven has recently been turned on.
    • If you don't find the screws, then they are inside. You will have to use the wire hook to unlock the oven.
    • Make sure the oven is unplugged.
  3. 3 Take a wire hanger. Unfold and make a small hook at the end. Try to slide the hook inside the oven and hook it on the lock.
    • Turn and pull the hook to unlock the oven.
    • Make sure the oven is unplugged.
  4. 4 Call an oven repairman from your local hardware store to manually unlock the oven if these methods don't work.
