Steamed carrots are a quick and easy side dish that goes well with almost any food. Steam cooking is one of the healthiest ways to cook vegetables as they retain their nutritional value, color, flavor, and texture. You can steam carrots in the steamer basket, microwave, or skillet (if you have no other choice). All three methods are described below.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Steamer basket

  1. 1 Bring water to a boil in a saucepan. It is not necessary to fill the pot completely; 2.5–5 centimeters of water will be enough to create steam.
  2. 2 Prepare your carrots. For four servings, you will need about 700 g. Wash the carrots thoroughly in cold water to remove any remaining dirt or pesticides. Use a knife to cut the stems and peel the carrots with a peeler. Then you can chop it however you like: leave it whole, cut into slices, cubes or circles.
  3. 3 Place the carrots in a steaming basket. If you don't have one, use a colander that fits.
  4. 4 Place the basket over boiling water. Make sure the basket does not come into contact with boiling water. If the carrots are in the water, they will be boiled, not steamed.
  5. 5 Cover the pot. Place a lid on the pot, but do not cover it completely. Leave a small gap on one side to allow the steam to escape.
  6. 6 Cook the carrots until tender. This should take 5-10 minutes, depending on the size of the pieces.
    • Check the doneness of the carrots with a fork. The fork should fit easily into the carrots.
    • The time for steaming carrots is for guidance only. You can cook it as long as you like, depending on whether you like crunchy or soft carrots.
  7. 7 Drain the water through a colander.
  8. 8 Transfer the carrots to a serving plate.
  9. 9 Add spices or seasonings. While the carrots are still hot, you can add any additives you like. A teaspoon of melted butter works very well. You can also lightly fry the carrots with a little olive oil, garlic, and lemon juice. Don't forget to season with salt and pepper.

Method 2 of 3: Microwave

  1. 1 Prepare your carrots.
  2. 2 Place the carrots in a microwave safe bowl. Add a tablespoon of water and cover the bowl with microwave-safe plastic wrap.
  3. 3 Cook the carrots over high heat. Cook until tender, about 4-6 minutes. Check the doneness of the carrots with a fork.
    • If the carrots are not yet cooked, place them back in the microwave and cook at 1–2 minute intervals until tender.
    • Be careful when opening the plastic wrap as it will be very hot!
  4. 4 Serve the carrots. While it's still in the bowl, you can add flavors and spices to your liking. A teaspoon of melted butter and some pepper and salt are always great. Transfer the carrots to a serving dish and serve immediately.

Method 3 of 3: Frying Pan

  1. 1 Wash and peel the carrots, remove the stems. Cut carrots into slices, slices, cubes, or small pieces.
  2. 2 Pour about 2.5 cm of water into a large skillet. Season with salt and bring water to a boil.
  3. 3 Place the carrots in the skillet.
  4. 4 Cover the skillet with a lid and cook over low heat until the water has evaporated and the carrots are cooked through. Add more water if necessary.
    • Carrots cooked this way are not exactly the same as steamed carrots, as they are cooked in water.
    • However, this is a good option if you don't have a steamer basket or microwave.
  5. 5 Drain excess water from the pan.
  6. 6 Then add flavors and spices such as butter, herbs (such as parsley or nutmeg), salt and pepper. Stir, place on a serving plate and serve.
