You have finally moved into your new home. It's perfect in every way, and you want it to stay that way. If you are religious or spiritual in nature, you may feel that blessing your home brings you peace and tranquility. Regardless of your religious or spiritual beliefs, you can start with Step 1 below to learn how to bless your home in a way that appeals to you.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Religious Blessing

  1. Have a Christian blessing. Blessing a Christian home is an age-old tradition that is held in the Protestant, Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches, among others. The blessing can be performed by an ordained priest or pastor, or by the owner of the home himself.
    • If you would like your home to be blessed by an ordained priest, invite him to come to your home; he will be happy to do it for you.
    • Normally, the priest walks from room to room, sprinkling each room with holy water. As he walks, he may recite one or more passages from the gospel.
    • If you prefer to bless your home yourself, you can use anointed oil (which can simply be cold-pressed, extra virgin oil, blessed by a priest) to make a cross on every window and door in the house.
    • As you make the gesture of the cross, say a simple prayer asking God to bless the room. For instance In the name of Jesus Christ, I ask You to fill this house with Your peace and happiness, or May Your Holy Spirit be through this house and fill this house with Your Spirit.
  2. Keeping a Jewish Blessing. There are several Jewish traditions that have to do with moving into a new home, or simply blessing an old home.
    • When Jewish people move into a new home, they are expected to have one mezuzah (a piece of parchment with an inscription of Hebrew phrases from the Torah) on each doorpost.
    • While the mezuzah is hung up, the following prayer is said Blessed are You, King our G-d, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to mezuzah to hang up.
    • It is also believed that Tuesday is the best day to move, that bread and salt should be the first things to come into the house, and that just after moving in, there should be a Chanukat Habayit, or housewarming party, where friends and family gather and where texts from the Torah are recited.
    • At the housewarming party, it is a tradition to eat seasonal fruit while the shehecheyanu blessing is pronounced: Blessed are You, Lord our G-d, King of the universe, who gave us life, nourished us and made it possible to celebrate this occasion.
  3. Keep a Hindu blessing. The performance of a Hindu blessing varies by region. In some places, the blessing of a home is the second most important ceremony in a lifetime, after a wedding.
    • However, in all regions the blessing is kept on the day the new home is occupied. A favorable move date will be determined by the local Hindu priest, who will conduct the blessing.
    • On that day, it is tradition (in some regions) for the homeowners to have a tray of gifts ready for the priest to use during the ceremony. The gifts usually consist of raw washed rice, mango leaves, ghee, coins, herbs, spices, fruits and flowers.
    • During the ceremony, the homeowners usually sit by the fire, wearing their finest clothes, chanting mantras. The priest usually recites a prayer asking for prosperity from the Hindu gods, as well as for purity and peace for the people who live in the house.
    • Contact a Hindu temple near you to find out how the blessing of your home is being carried out in your area.
  4. Holds an Islamic blessing. Muslim people primarily bless their homes through prayers - usually there is no need for an official ceremony to be held. Still, there are certain prayers and traditions that are recommended:
    • If you are going to move, it is recommended to say a three-part prayer, asking Allah for baraka (blessing), rahma, (compassion) and dhikr (memorial) for the house.
    • You can also say a prayer asking for protection from the evil eye and envy of others and saying the Prophetic Supplication: I seek salvation in the perfect words of Allah, away from you and all evil, harmful things, and accusing eyes.
    • It is also recommended that you invite your friends and family over for dinner, as feeding others is seen as an expression of charity and a way of showing your gratitude to Allah. During dinner your guests and you can recite passages from the Quran.
    • Apart from the blessing of your home that you performed when you came to live there, you can also bless your home every time you step through the front door, saying the following prayer: I seek salvation in the perfect words of Allah, away from the evil of what He has created. If you repeat this prayer three times, you will make sure that you will not be harmed when you get home.
  5. Perform a Buddhist blessing. In Buddhism, the ceremony Khuan Ban Mai performed in some regions when a new home is being built, to protect the home and residents. The ceremony is performed by a group consisting of nine monks, who are invited early in the morning on the day of the ceremony.
    • The monks then perform a ritual in which sacred water and wax candles are used. The melting of the wax from the candles in the water is believed to wash away evil and sorrow.
    • The monks also chant prayers in Pali, running a white string through their hands. It is believed that the vibrations of the prayers pass through the cords, protecting the home and residents.
    • After the ceremony, the monks sit at the table and eat the meal prepared by the homeowners and their friends and neighbors. They are supposed to have finished the meal before noon. Then one of the monks sprinkles holy water in each room, after which all the monks leave.
    • Once the monks have left, the remaining guests eat the food that is left. In the afternoon they perform the wire ceremony, where the guests wrap a white string around the homeowners and bless them.

Method 2 of 2: A spiritual blessing

  1. Clean and tidy your house. It is important to clean and tidy your home before blessing your home. Because this makes you feel positive and you invite fresh new energy to come into your home.
  2. Invite your friends and family. It's nice to invite your friends and family so that you can be a part of the ritual of blessing your home together. Ask them to stand in a circle and hold hands.
  3. Light a pink candle. Pink symbolizes love and gentleness, inviting these energies into your home.
  4. Share the blessing. Pass the candle to each other in the circle until everyone has their turn. Whoever holds the candle blesses the house and the owners. Examples of such a blessing are: May this house be a sacred place for you and your family or May everyone who enters this house feel peace and love.
  5. Walk through every room in the house and make your intention known. After the blessing, you can take the pink candle to any room and say your intention for any room, be it the bedroom, baby's room, or kitchen.
  6. Let the pink candle burn for an hour. When the ceremony is complete, place the pink candle in a central place in the house and let it burn for at least an hour.
  7. Open all doors and windows facing east. This allows the energy of the sun, which gives life, to flow into your home, bringing energy, life and light into your home.
