- Periodically, you can check the condition of the baseball cap by taking it out of the water and inspecting it for dirt.
- Wearing a baseball cap over a round melon, ball, or other spherical object while drying will help it maintain its shape. You can also put the cap on yourself and wait until it dries.
- Do not dry baseball caps in a clothes dryer. This can damage the headgear.
Method 2 of 3: Washing wool caps
- 1 Use a detergent specially formulated for wool. Wool is a strong and durable fabric, but requires the use of special detergents. Look for a detergent specifically made for woollens or simply safe for woollens.
- 2 Soak your hat in soapy water. Add a small amount of wool detergent (about a tablespoon) to a bucket or sink of cool water. Let the woolen baseball cap soak in the soapy water for about an hour.
- If the cap is very dirty, you can wet it, and then pointwise wipe problem areas with your hands or an old toothbrush. Just don't rub the hat too hard, or you will damage the coat.
- 3 Rinse your cap. Drain the bucket or sink after soaking your cap. Place the hat under cool running water and rinse off any remaining traces of soap and dirt.
- 4 Dry the cap on a ball-shaped object. Woolen fabric is particularly susceptible to deformation due to improper drying. Place the cap on a round melon, ball, balloon, or other ball about the size of your head and air dry.
- In case of emergency, the cap can even be thrown over a large coffee can.
- This will probably not be so convenient, but to keep the cap from losing its shape, it can also be dried directly on the head.
- Never dry wool caps in a clothes dryer.
Method 3 of 3: Cleaning Old Baseball Caps
- 1 Test your old cap for color fastness before cleaning it. Old baseball caps can be collectibles, but it can be difficult to determine what materials they are made of and how best to care for them. Usually, old caps can be cleaned with cool soapy water. However, you first need to take a rag and apply this solution to an inconspicuous area of the headgear (for example, on the inside of the strap).
- If the dye from the fabric passes onto the rag and sheds, the headgear should not be cleaned on your own. Either take it to a professional dry cleaner or leave it as it is.
- If the color is persistent, the cap can be cleaned with soapy water.
- 2 Scrub the soiled areas of your old baseball cap. Older caps are more delicate, so they should not be completely submerged in water.Instead, take a clean soft cloth or old toothbrush dampened with a little cleaning solution and gently scrub the dirty areas.
- As soon as the dirt comes off, dampen a cloth with clean cool water and wipe the soap solution off the cap.
- 3 Leave the baseball cap to dry on its own. Wear the hat over a ball-shaped object such as a ball or round melon. Look for something that is roughly the size of your head. Leave the cap to dry completely.
Tips
- If you are unsure of what material the hat is made of, look for the tag sewn inside. If there is one, information about the material will be indicated on it.
Warnings
- Some new caps are machine washable. Check the information on the headdress tag first. Unless it says the hat is machine washable, wash it by hand.
- Never wash baseball caps in the dishwasher.
- Do not use bleach when washing baseball caps as this will discolor the original color of the hat.
