Torrents or "BitTorrents" are an open source, "peer-to-peer" file sharing method. Torrents are commonly used to exchange large media files directly between users. Read the article to learn how to distribute files (be a seeder) or download (be a leecher) using torrents.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Preparation

1. 1 Read the copyright law. Most of what is torrented is highly illegal. Don't become one of those who are against the law. Only distribute and download files for which you are legally entitled to distribute.
2. 2 Download the BitTorrent client. The BitTorrent client is designed to manage your downloads over a torrent network. Make sure you download the torrent client from a trusted source. There are dozens of clients available today, but the most popular are BitTorrent, uTorrent, and Vuze.

Method 2 of 3: To download

1. 1 Find a torrent tracker that suits you. You can download torrents from many sites. They are called torrent trackers. Some torrent trackers are private, others are public; some specialize only in music or video. Search Google for the one you like. Popular torrent trackers: Rutracker, The Pirate Bay and Kinozal.tv.
   • Public torrent trackers: anyone can join and everyone can see your actions. These sites are frequently checked for copyright infringement. To avoid legal problems, only distribute files that you are legally entitled to distribute.
   • Closed torrent trackers: the name speaks for itself. Often you need an invitation to register on such sites. Basically, closed torrent trackers set their own exchange rules.
2. 2 Find the file you need. Search and locate the file you want. Most torrent trackers have a search bar where you can enter artist name, title, etc. Select the desired file.
   • Make sure the file is safe. Review user comments and history.
   • Try to select only popular torrents. Torrent download speed depends on the number of seeders. The more seeders, the higher the download speed. It is also less likely that a torrent with a large number of seeders is fake or infected with a virus.
3. 3 Click Download. Next to the file you want to download, there should be an icon labeled "Download torrent", "Click to download" or something similar. Once you click on "Download", the torrent client will open and a dialog box will open with a selection of the files you want to download. Choose the ones that you need.
   • To avoid downloading unnecessary files or viruses, it is recommended that you deselect unnecessary or unknown files.
   • Once completed, the downloaded files can be found in the folder shown in the Add New Torrent window.
4. 4 Click OK. Once you click on "OK", the download progress will be displayed in the torrent client.
   • Note: You will not be able to use the file until it is fully downloaded.
5. 5 Find the downloaded file. Navigate to the folder specified in the download dialog box and should contain your file.

Method 3 of 3: How to Become a Seeder

1. 1 Leave your torrent client open. After downloading the file, you become a seeder. Seeders are very important for torrenting to work. Therefore, some closed torrent trackers require a certain ratio of downloaded and uploaded from you, usually 1: 1. To thank the torrent community, just leave the torrent client running in the background.
   • The more seeders and fewer leechers, the faster the download speed of the torrent.
   • In most tariff plans for using the Internet, the upload speed is lower than the download speed. This means that in order to donate as much as you downloaded, you need to leave the torrent client open longer than you downloaded the torrent. A good way to do this is to leave your torrent client running in the background.
   • Note: If you move or delete downloaded files, you will lose seeding.

Tips

• Consider installing a security software such as PeerBlock or Peer Guardian.
• Keep your antivirus software up to date.
• Always be sure to download safe files. Scan downloaded files with antivirus before opening.

Warnings

• Some ISPs discourage torrenting, so they block any torrent-related traffic. Because of this, the download speed may be slow or not at all.
• A decrease in upload speed can cause a ban (restriction of user rights) on some closed torrent trackers.
• If you infringe someone's copyright while using torrents, you can be sued. Do not do that.
