Driving is a wonderful experience that many teenagers are looking forward to. Before you can get your license, most states require you to start with a driver's license. It usually has many restrictions and is designed to get you ready to drive yourself.

Note: This article applies to obtaining a driver's license in the United States.

Steps

1. 1 Find the closest DTS (Department of Motor Vehicles) in your state.
2. 2 Be the minimum age limit. Usually, the average age is 15 years, but this is different in each state. Contact the TPA for the minimum age.
3. 3 Study the Driver's Manual. You can also get it from your TPA. It is best to use the one used in your state as some driving laws may vary from region to region.
4. 4 Take a driving course. Most states now require you to take these courses to qualify. Some states may even require you to pass them before you can get your ID. However, try to take courses before getting your license. This will prepare you for the written test to get you started faster.
5. 5 Visit the TPA to take the certification exam. The tests are usually written after courses when you are eligible for a driver's license. Don't forget to bring these things with you:
   • Social security card
   • Identity document
     • This can include: a passport, government birth certificate, or state-certified ID.
   • Residence document
   • Citizenship document
   • A parent or guardian if you are under 18.
   • Some states may require proof of school attendance.
6. 6 Take the written test. If you teach written instructions, then you can do it. If you still fail this challenge, wait a short period before attempting it again.
7. 7 Pay the certification and testing fees and you're ready to start driving!

Tips

• Take your glasses or contact lenses with you if you need to wear them.
• Check the requirements and regulations for your state, as there are slight differences in the laws of each state.

Warnings

• Before driving with a license, check the restrictions for you. In most states, you must be of legal age (21) or older to carry passengers.Comply with these laws and restrictions, otherwise your driver's license may be revoked.
