Foreigners who marry Thai citizens are entitled to a special Thai marriage visa (The Thai Marriage Visa) for a period of one year. To do this, you need to do the following.
Steps
- 1 If you are married while in Thailand on a tourist visa, obtain a nonimmigrant visa for a long stay in Thailand (90 days). There are two options for how to do this:
- Return to your home country and apply for a nonimmigrant visa at the Thai Embassy.
- Contact the Immigration Department in Bangkok and apply for a nonimmigrant visa there.
- 2 Collect the required documents. A list of documents is given below in the "What you need" section. Prepare two sets of certified copies of all documents.
- 3Before your visa expires, apply for Thai marriage visa at your local immigration office.
- 4Submit two sets of certified copies along with original documents to the Thai Immigration Office for review.
- 5 Confirm the data specified in the documents. Your documents will be pending for a month, during which you will be asked to confirm some information.
- 6After a month, contact the immigration office again and get a visa for one year.
What do you need
- Your passport (original and copies)
- Wife / Husband ID
- Thai House Book of Wife / Husband
- Birth certificates of children (if any)
- Your marriage certificates
- Banking Book in Thailand showing funds of 400,000 THB (you can deposit 400,000 THB in a savings or fixed deposit account with a Thai bank two months before applying for the first visa and three months before applying for each subsequent visa )
- Instead of a bank account, you can provide a letter from your embassy showing an income of 40,000 THB per month (this should be the foreign national's own income, not joint income or wife's income; it should not be transferred to a joint account)
- Letter from your Thai bank confirming the availability of funds
- Drawn map of your place of residence
- Proof of where you live with your wife / husband (if you are renting a property, you need a copy of your ID and home registration of the owner)
- 2 photos together inside your house
- 2 photographs outside the house with the number of the house or condominium
Warnings
- Consular officers reserve the right to request additional documents as needed.
- Documents confirming financial solvency must be provided only to a foreign male who married a Thai citizen. Such documents are not requested from foreign women.
- After obtaining a Thai marriage visa, you must check in at the Immigration Office every 90 days.
- A Thai marriage visa needs to be renewed annually, regardless of the circumstances (birth of a child, and so on).
