Ceramic pots are made from clay, which is then kilned at a high temperature. Most often, shops sell pots that are covered with special glaze. But you can also buy unglazed pots. And in our article we will tell you how to paint both types of pots.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: How to paint glazed ceramic pots

  1. 1 Rinse the pot well under the tap, both inside and out.
  2. 2 Clean it with soapy water using a brush or abrasive sponge. You can also use an old toothbrush for this.
  3. 3 Rinse the pot well.
  4. 4 Place the pot on the table and let it dry.
  5. 5 Buy a can of glossy wall paint, number 200 sandpaper, paintbrushes, and a can of latex primer.
  6. 6 It is better to paint the pot outdoors, choosing a day when there is no wind or rain. Place a piece of cardboard or newspaper under the pot so that nothing will stain the paint.
  7. 7 Begin sanding the pot with sandpaper to slightly roughen the glaze.
  8. 8 Dry the pot with a clean, damp cloth.
  9. 9 Then take a brush and paint the pot with primer. Let it dry completely. Since the walls of the pot will be rough due to the sandpaper, the primer should lie down without problems. You can apply another coat of primer if you like.
  10. 10 Read the instructions on the paint can before painting the pot. As a rule, you first need to shake it vigorously.
  11. 11 Begin painting the inside of the pot, making even and smooth strokes with your hand.
  12. 12 Let the paint dry completely. Then turn the pot upside down.
  13. 13 Spray paint on the outside of the pot. Apply it in even, sweeping strokes.
  14. 14 Place the pot in the sun to help the paint dry faster.
  15. 15 Do not throw away the paint can to touch up the walls of the pot if necessary.
  16. 16 Wait at least 24 hours after painting before potting your plant.

Method 2 of 2: How to paint an unglazed ceramic pot

  1. 1 Buy some unglazed ceramic pots. You will also need paint, sealant, glaze, and brushes.
  2. 2 Choose a spot where you will paint the pots. It must be well ventilated.
  3. 3 If you paint on the table, cover it with plastic wrap or newspapers to avoid staining it with paint.
  4. 4 Sand out any seams that may be on the sides of the pot. Use fine to medium-grained sandpaper for this. Also, lightly walk along the sides of the pot so that the paint then lays on them better.
  5. 5 Take a dry rag and dust off the pot. Or blow it off with a hairdryer.
  6. 6 Then wipe the pot with a damp cloth.
  7. 7 Let the pot dry completely.
  8. 8 Spray the inside of the pot with a waterproof sealant. It will keep moisture from seeping through the walls of the pot and ruining your work.
  9. 9 The sealant must dry completely.
  10. 10 Take a brush and apply a coat of primer to the walls. The primer will fill in the pits and irregularities in the walls of the pot, and will also help the paint to adhere better to them.
  11. 11 Let the primer dry.
  12. 12 Then apply a thin layer of acrylic paint with a brush. Use a good brush that won't leave bristles in the paint.
  13. 13 Let the paint dry.
  14. 14 Apply another thin coat of paint and let dry.
  15. 15 Protect the paint by applying a thin coat of acrylic gloss on top.
  16. 16 Let the pot dry for at least 24 hours before filling it with soil.
