1 Mix 1 lemon juice with 1 cup (240 ml) water. Cut the lemon in half and squeeze as much juice from each half as possible into a microwave-safe bowl. Add water to lemon juice and mix thoroughly with a spoon.
  • If you don't have lemon, try another citrus like lime or orange.
  • 2 Cut the halves into smaller pieces and dip them in lemon water. After you've squeezed all the juice out of the lemons, use a sharp knife to cut the lemon into four or eight pieces. Dip all pieces into water and stir again with a spoon.
    • Leftover juice in the lemon will begin to evaporate in the microwave, making it easier to remove dirt and food debris.
  • 3 Leave the solution in the microwave and turn it on for 3 minutes. Place the bowl in the microwave and turn it on for 3 minutes. Soon, the water will boil and begin to evaporate from the bowl. Leave the door closed to allow the steam to remain inside.
    • If liquid remains in the bowl, turn on the microwave for another 1-2 minutes, until almost all of the solution has evaporated.
  • 4 After 5 minutes, when the water has cooled, remove the bowl from the microwave. Keep the door closed until most of the steam has settled on the sides of the microwave. Then carefully open the door and remove the bowl to start cleaning!

A warning: The bowl might get very hot in the microwave. If the bowl is too hot, use oven mitts to avoid scalding your fingers.

  • 5 Dry the microwave with a clean towel. First, remove the tray from the microwave. Set it aside and wipe the sides of the oven with a towel dipped in plain water. Don't forget to wipe down the door as well! Food and traces inside the microwave should come off without too much trouble.
    • If you do not want to wipe the inside of the microwave oven with a towel, use a damp sponge with a cleaning layer.
    • Remember to put the tray back when you clean the microwave!
  • Method 2 of 2: Removing stubborn stains

    1. 1 Add white vinegar to lemon juice to dissolve burnt food. If your microwave is heavily soiled, add 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of vinegar to the lemon juice to enhance the effectiveness of the product. Stir the solution thoroughly to prevent the microwave from smelling like vinegar.
      • If there are no burnt food in the microwave, do not add vinegar to the lemon solution.

Advice: If more than 1 month has passed since the last cleaning of the microwave, add 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of vinegar to the solution to loosen carbon deposits.

    2. 2 Dip a towel in the lemon solution and dry it in the microwave. If you come across a stubborn stain, dampen a corner of the towel with the leftover lemon solution. Then rub the stain vigorously to remove it.If the stain persists, use a mild abrasive (more on that later).
      • If the lemon solution runs out, reheat a new batch for 2 minutes, and then leave it inside for another 5 minutes. Use the rest of the solution to wipe away stains.
    3. 3 Use baking soda to remove stubborn stains. Apply baking soda to the stain and let it sit for 1-2 minutes. Soak a cloth in lemon solution and wipe the stain thoroughly. As a mild abrasive, baking soda will scrape off burnt food, and lemon solution will help dissolve any traces of food.
      • Wipe down the microwave well so that no baking soda remains inside.

    Warnings

    • Carefully remove the bowl of water from the microwave to avoid accidentally tipping over or spilling it. The bowl can stay hot for another 15 minutes!
