This wikiHow teaches you how to update Java on your computer. While Java usually updates itself when possible, you can use Java's update feature to force an available update on Windows and Mac computers.

To step

Method 1 of 2: In Windows

1. Open Start Type Configure Java. It will now search for matching programs.
2. click on Configure Java. This is at the top of the list of matching programs. This will open the Java Control Panel.
3. Click on the tab Update. This is at the top of the Java settings window.
4. click on Edit now. You can find this button in the lower right corner of the window. This will prompt Java to start looking for an update.
5. Give permission to have Java updated. If Java finds an available update, follow all onscreen prompts to confirm the update, then let your computer install the latest version of Java.
   • If you receive a message stating that you already have the latest version of Java, you do not need to update Java.

Method 2 of 2: On a Mac

1. Open the Apple menu click on System Preferences .... It's in the drop-down menu. The System Preferences window opens.
2. click on Java. This coffee cup icon should be at the bottom of the System Preferences window, although you may need to scroll down.
   • If you the Javaoption in System Preferences, go to the last step of this method.
3. Click on the tab Update. You'll find this at the top of the window.
4. click on Edit now. This is in the bottom right of the window.
5. click on Install update when prompted. It's in the bottom right corner of the window.
   • If you receive a message stating that you are already using the latest version of Java, Java does not need to be updated.
6. Let Java update itself. Java will get the update and start downloading the most recent version of Java.
   • You may be asked to enter your Mac's password at some point in the update process. If so, enter your password and press ⏎ Return.
7. Download the most recent version of Java. If you get the listing Java cannot be found in the System Preferences window, you can update Java by reinstalling the program:
   • Go to https://www.java.com/en/ in your computer's web browser.
   • Click on the red button Free Java Download.
   • click on Agree and start downloading for free.
   • Double-click the downloaded Java DMG file.
   • Drag the Java logo to the "Applications" folder in the window that opens.
   • Follow the installation instructions on the screen.

Tips

• Java will usually update automatically, but installing an update manually as indicated in this article can help speed up the update process.
• Installing the latest version of Java will replace your current version with the updated Java installation.

Warnings

• If you receive a Java update pop-up on any page in your browser, close the page and try to update Java as described in this article, instead of using the pop-up. Some pages use fake update messages to install a virus.
