Format the SSD if you are going to sell or throw it away, or install a new operating system on it. You can format an SSD on a Windows or macOS computer.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: On Windows
- 1 Install the SSD on your computer, or connect the drive to your computer using a USB cable.
- 2 Open the Start menu and click Control Panel.
- 3 Click System and Security> Administration.
- 4 Double click on "Computer Management".
- 5 Click Disk Management in the left pane of the Computer Management window.
- 6 Click on the name of the SSD in the list that appears on the screen.
- 7 Right click on the SSD drive and select "Format" from the menu.
- 8 Select the desired values from the File System and Cluster Size menus.
- 9 Check the box next to "Quick Format" and click "OK". The SSD will be formatted.
Method 2 of 2: On macOS
- 1 Install the SSD on your computer, or connect the drive to your computer using a USB cable.
- 2 Open Finder and make sure the SSD appears in the device list.
- 3 Click Programs> Utilities.
- 4 Start the Disk Utility application.
- 5 Click on the SSD drive name in the left pane of the Disk Utility window.
- 6 Go to the "Erase" tab and find the value in the "Partition Scheme" line, which is located at the bottom of the window.
- 7 Make sure the value that appears on the Partition Map row is Master Boot Record or Apple Partition Map. Now go to the "Section" tab.
- If you see GUID Partition Scheme in the Partition Map row, open the Format menu, select Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), click the Erase tab, and go to Step 13.
- 8 Select the desired number of partitions from the Partition Structure menu.
- 9 Enter the name of the partition or SSD drive. Do this in the Section Information section. Now open the Format menu and choose Mac OS X Extended (Journaled).
- 10 Click on the name of the SSD in the center window and then click on Options.
- 11 Click GUID Partition Scheme> OK.
- 12 Click Apply. Now click on "Partition" to confirm that you are going to format the SSD.
- 13 Wait for the formatting process to complete. When this happens, the name of the SSD will appear in Finder.
Warnings
- We do not recommend defragmenting or completely formatting the SSD on a Windows computer. Remember that SSD read / write cycles are limited, so format your SSD quickly to keep it healthy.
