It may seem like you can't get rid of those nasty greasy stains in your favorite leather jacket, bag or piece of furniture, but if you get there in time and use the right ingredients, there are cleaning methods that work effectively. With a homemade cleaner you can quickly and effectively clean and shine your leather objects.

Method 1 of 3: Remove the stain quickly

1. Gather your supplies. If you've just spilled some butter on your leather boots or bacon fat on the couch, it's best to get started right away. If you're quick, all you need is the following to clean the leather item:
   • A microfiber cloth
   • Talcum powder
2. Try alternatives. There are many different recipes for homemade cleansers, each of which produces different results. If you can't get the area as clean as you'd like, try different recipes. Use the same basic cleaning method, but try different combinations of the natural products you have at home. According to some people, the following recipes work:
   • Equal parts water and white vinegar
   • Equal parts lemon juice and tartar powder
   • One part vinegar to two parts flaxseed oil

Ingredients

• Cloth that is roughly the same color as the stained object, plus two more cloths
• An atomizer for method 2
• Patience

Homemade cleaning paste

• 125 ml salt water (90 ml distilled water and 25 grams pure sea salt)
• 1/2 teaspoon of refined white flour
• 1 tablespoon of baking soda

Dishwashing liquid

• Mild liquid dish soap
• Distilled water in a spray bottle

Tips

• The grease stain can look quite severe at first, but will often disappear completely on its own as the grease will be absorbed by the leather.
• Cleaning won't work when it comes to aniline leather. You need special products with a degreasing effect to clean this type of leather.
• There is always more fat in the leather than you can see from the front.
• If it is painted leather with a protective coating, a good water-based leather cleaner should solve the problem. The foam will remove all grease residues from the surface.
• Using a good fluorochemical to protect leather will help remove new grease stains from any leather more easily. Such a means will make the leather less likely to absorb oil and dirt.

Warnings

• Always test the cleaner of your choice in an inconspicuous area when cleaning delicate leather. This way you can be sure that the cleaner will not affect the color of the leather.
