Having a clean aquarium is vital to the health of your hermit crabs. This article describes the natural process of cleaning an aquarium and its contents.

Steps

  1. 1 Heat dechlorinated water in a large saucepan.
    • The amount of boiled water should be about 1.5 times the volume of your aquarium.
  2. 2 Remove hermit crabs from their habitat and place in a container.
    • Make sure this temporary home is tall enough to keep them from escaping.
  3. 3 Empty the sand and remove the contents of the aquarium.
  4. 4 Take a large bucket and fill it halfway with boiled water.
  5. 5 Place whatever you want to wash in a large bucket (e.g. old shells, plates, toys, sponges, etc.)).
  6. 6 Let the things get wet in a large bucket until the water cools down.
  7. 7 Dry everything with a towel or rag.
  8. 8 Place items to dry on a paper towel.
  9. 9 Fill an empty tank with boiled water.
  10. 10 Drain the aquarium and wait for it to dry.
  11. 11 Add new substrate to the bottom of the aquarium.
  12. 12 Return all content there (including your clawed friends).
  13. 13 Have fun with your hermit crabs!
