Microsoft's Internet Connection Sharing feature allows a computer connected to the Internet via a cable or DSL modem to share a connection with other computers connected to it on the network.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: On the host computer

  1. 1 Click on the "Start" button and then click on "Control Panel".
  2. 2 Click on the Network and Internet Connections icon, select Network Connections.
  3. 3 Right click on the connection you are using to connect to the Internet. For example, when connecting to the Internet via a modem, right-click on the required connection under the Dial-up section.
  4. 4 Click on the Properties button. Click on the "Advanced" tab.
  5. 5 In the "Sharing Internet Connection" section, check the box next to "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box".
  6. 6 If you are using a shared remote Internet connection, check the box next to Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet if you want to allow your computer to automatically connect to the Internet.
  7. 7 Click "OK". After receiving the message, click on the "Yes" button.

Method 2 of 2: On the client computer

  1. 1 Click on the "Start" button and then click on "Control Panel". Click on the Network and Internet Connections icon, select Network Connections.

  5. 5 In the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, click OK.

Tips

  • The Internet connection will be publicly available to other computers over a local area network (LAN). For a network adapter connected to a local network, a static IP address of 192.168.0.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 are set
  • If you are using a cable, then a shared computer will have two LAN slots.
  • You also have the option to assign a unique static IP address ranging from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254. For example, you can assign the following combination of static IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway:
    • IP address: 192.168.0.2
    • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    • Default gateway: 192.168.0.1
