Most nail polish is glossy. Nowadays it is very trendy to have matte or non-glossy nails. There are brands that also sell matte nail polish, but they are often very expensive. There are also other, cheaper methods of getting matte nails, for example with steam or cornmeal.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Using cornmeal to get matte nail polish

  1. Now use a clean brush to paint your nails with this mixture. Do it as you always do.
    • Don't forget to start with your cuticle.
    • Paint your nails in three stripes: one in the middle and two next to it.
    • Leave a small indent so that it looks professional.
  2. Let the nail polish dry completely. When the polish is dry, you have a matte, non-shimmery nail polish.
    • Remember not to blow or wave your hands.
    • Let the polish dry while laying your hands flat with your fingers spread.
    • Do not put a topcoat over it, because then your nails will shine again.

Method 2 of 3: Using a matte nail polish

  1. Buy a matte nail polish. They are more expensive than normal nail polish.
    • Brands like Essie, Maybelline and Revlon make nail polish that is matte.
    • If you can't find it, Sally Hansen has a matte topcoat that you can put over your normal nail polish, it will look matte too.
    • At stores like Douglas or Ici Paris you have the most choice in colors and brands of matte nail polish.
  2. Run a cotton ball with nail polish remover over your nail. Rub your entire nail with this.
    • Push it under your cuticle and along the sides of your nails.
    • This removes dirt and grime from your nails.
    • You also degrease your nail, so that the nail polish adheres better.
    • Let your nails dry. This will only take a few seconds.
  3. Paint your nails with a transparent basecoat. Most nail polish already contains a base coat.
    • Check the label of your nail polish to see if this is the case.
    • If not, apply a thin layer of base coat on each nail.
    • First, do your dominant hand with your non-dominant hand, starting with the little finger and working your way up to the thumb. Then you can paint your nails without running the risk of touching and smearing the nail polish.
  4. Clean up the mess. Dip a cotton swab in nail polish remover.
    • Correct mistakes by rubbing spilled blobs with the cotton swab.
    • Take a good look at your nails one last time to see if you have cleared up all the mess.
    • Let the nail polish dry for at least 2 minutes.
  5. Pour some water into a saucepan. Put it on the fire.
    • Bring the water to a boil.
    • Make sure that a lot of steam comes out of the pan.
    • With the steam you can make the nail polish matte.
  6. Keep your hand over the steam. You have to make sure that every nail is exposed to the steam.
    • Usually you only need to hold your hand above the steam for 3 to 5 seconds.
    • Be careful not to keep your hands too close to the water as the steam can burn you.
    • Slowly move your hand through the steam so that all pieces of the nails are hit by the steam.
    • Look at your nail polish. It should now look matte. If there are still areas that shine, keep your hands above the steam for another 3 to 5 seconds.
