Knowing how to measure a dress can come in handy if you want to sell it online. It will also help if you want to buy a dress yourself and know for sure that it will suit you. Determining the length of the dress is quite simple - all you need is a measuring tape and a flat surface on which the dress can be flattened out. Then, based on these measurements, you can tell how long the dress will be: mini, midi (knee-length) or floor-length.

Steps

Part 1 of 2: How to Measure Your Dress Length

  1. 1 Spread the dress out on the floor or kitchen counter. Use your hands to smooth the dress as much as possible so that the front of the dress is facing up. Make sure that all decorative elements, ruffles on the back of the dress and shoulder straps are flattened too.
  2. 2 If you have a dress with spaghetti straps, place the end of the measuring tape at the top of the strap. Take a sewing measuring tape and place the end of it against the top of one of the straps.
  3. 3 Measure the length of the dress from the very top to the hem. Pull the measuring tape horizontally from the top of the strap to the bottom of the skirt. Look at what division of the scale of the measuring tape is the bottom of the dress and write down this number.
    • Most dresses are approximately 76 to 160 cm long.
  4. 4 Wear the dress and measure it from the neck if it is strapless. A strapless dress should be measured on the body. Press one end of the measuring tape in the middle of your collarbones, unwind the tape down to the bottom of the dress to get the correct length.
    • You may need help to position the measuring tape correctly on you.

Part 2 of 2: How to determine the type of dress

  1. 1 Dress length 76-89 cm. If the total length of the dress falls within this span, then it is a very short top or mid-thigh dress, also known as a mini dress.
  2. 2 Dress length 91-102 cm. This length of the dress ends somewhere above the knee or right at the knee, that is, this is a cocktail dress.
    • If your height is more or less than average, such a dress may cover the knee differently or not at all.
  3. 3 Dress length 100-110 cm. This means that the dress will cover the knee or calves, that is, this is a midi dress.
  4. 4 Dress length 140-160 cm. Such a dress is quite long, covers the ankles or even the legs entirely; this is a maxi dress.
