Here's how to get rid of rats without harming the environment. Poisons, which are often used to kill rodents, have many deadly effects. They can harm pets and small children, smell too strong and are not considered environmentally friendly. Here are some good alternatives.

Steps

1. 1 Go to your local hardware store and buy a rodent trap. These can be classic spring or sticky traps, live rat traps and a variety of spring traps. If you just set one of these traps, it is unlikely to lead to positive results.
2. 2 Pick a bait and put it in the trap. Rodent victims have already used many different baits, but most agreed that peanut butter served as the best bait.
3. 3 Once the rodent has been caught, dispose of it properly.
4. 4 If you plan on releasing it back into the wild, use corn oil on a sticky trap.
5. 5 If you have caught a live rodent and are planning to kill it, do it quickly (as if with one shot). Methods such as drowning are inhumane choices, try to avoid such options.
6. 6 If someone you know has a snake, ask if they need food to feed.

Tips

• The main idea is to correctly position the bait on the latch. If you put peanut butter on top and bottom of the latch, the rat is more likely to be trapped.
• If you decide to use the sticky trap, you have a better chance of success by placing three traps, side by side, along the wall.
• If you set a trap, don't be surprised that there are no results within 2-4 days. Some experts recommend luring rodents by setting a trap, but do not adjust the latch. The rats will be attracted to the bait, and they will begin to explore it. If the rat gets no negative experience while in the trap, it will become bolder and eventually take the bait. As soon as you notice that the rodent is eating the bait, set up the trap as needed.
• Rats tend to move around the edges of the room, such as along baseboards. This is the place where traps are recommended.

Warnings

• Rats are not attracted to cheese as bait.
• Regardless of your decision to release or destroy the rat, be careful to avoid being bitten. Put on heavy gloves and turn the trap towards you with the side opposite to the rodent's head - this is the safest way.
