Learn how to add contacts to the Facebook Messenger app on your iPhone or Android device. This can be done by using your smartphone's contact list, entering a phone number, or scanning another Facebook Messenger user's special code.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Using your contact list

1. 1 Start Facebook Messenger. Click on the lightning bolt speech cloud icon.
   • If prompted, enter your Facebook phone number and password to sign in to your account.
2. 2 Go to the tab Home. It is marked with a house icon and is located in the lower left corner of the screen.
3. 3 Click on the "Profile" icon. It is located in the upper left corner of the screen (iPhone) or in the upper right corner of the screen (Android).
4. 4 Tap People. This option is near the bottom of the page.
5. 5 Sync your smartphone contacts. If contact sync is turned off, a white slider (iPhone) or the word Turn Off (Android) appears under Sync. Click on the "Sync" slider or option to enable contact sync so that all Messenger users on your contact list are added to Messenger.
   • If you see a green slider (iPhone) or the word Enable under Sync, your smartphone contacts are already synced to Messenger.
   • On iPhone, first open your contacts for Messenger. Launch the Settings app, scroll down and tap Messenger, then tap the white slider next to Contacts.

Method 2 of 3: By entering a phone number

1. 1 Start Facebook Messenger. Click on the lightning bolt speech cloud icon.
   • If prompted, enter your Facebook phone number and password to sign in to your account.
2. 2 Go to the "People" tab. It's marked with a horizontal line icon and is located in the lower left side of the screen (iPhone) or the upper right side of the screen (Android).
3. 3 Tap +. It's in the top-right (iPhone) or bottom-right (Android) corner. A menu will appear.
4. 4 Tap Enter your phone number. This option is on the menu. A text box is displayed where you can enter a phone number.
   • Skip this step on an Android smartphone.
5. 5 Enter your phone number. Tap the text box, and then use the on-screen keyboard to enter a phone number.
6. 6 Click on Save. It's in the upper-right corner of the window. This will search for a Facebook user whose name matches a phone number.
   • On an Android smartphone, simply tap Add Contact and skip the next step.
7. 7 Add a contact. Click "Add" to send a friend request to the person whose phone number you entered. If he agrees, you can chat with him on Facebook Messenger.
   • You can also send a message to this person, but to view it, the user must accept the invitation.
   • If the phone number you entered doesn't match any Facebook profile, click Invite on Messenger to send an invitation to the user.

Method 3 of 3: By scanning the code

1. 1 Start Facebook Messenger. Click on the lightning bolt speech cloud icon.
   • If prompted, enter your Facebook phone number and password to sign in to your account.
2. 2 Go to the "People" tab. It is marked with a horizontal line icon and is located at the bottom left of the screen.
3. 3 Tap Scan the code (iPhone) or Scan Messenger Code (Android). It's near the top of the screen. The code scanner will open.
4. 4 Ask a friend to display the code on the screen. To do this, he must go to the "People" tab, tap "Scan Code" and click "My Code" at the top of the screen.
5. 5 Point the smartphone camera at the code. The code must fit into the circle displayed on the smartphone screen.
6. 6 Click on Add to Messengerwhen prompted. You will find this option at the top of the screen. The contact will be added to your Messenger.

Tips

• Your Messenger contacts list by default includes your Facebook friends. Add your Facebook friends to automatically add them to your Messenger.
• If you've added someone who doesn't add you to their contact list, click the yellow wave of the hand icon to notify that person that you want to chat without sending messages.

Warnings

• Don't add people you don't know.
