Nalgene water bottles are very convenient to use and carry, but it is important to clean them regularly after several cycles of use. These bottles can be washed with soap or in the dishwasher. A regular baking soda solution can help deal with sticky residues or strange odors. Also, the inside of the bottle is sometimes covered with mold. In this case, bleach must be applied to kill the mold before it grows too large.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Washing the bottle

1. 1 Rub the bottle with dishwashing liquid. Add some product to the flask and top up with water. Shake to create a lather and rinse thoroughly with a clean bottle brush or sponge. Then rinse to wash off all the lather.
   • A little dishwashing detergent won't hurt at all, especially if you rinse the bottle thoroughly enough, but you can also use lemon juice instead.
   • After that, it is advisable to wipe the outside of the bottle with a sponge or brush.
2. 2 Wipe down the plastic hinge and cover. Use a sponge soaked in soapy water to wipe off the plastic ring that rotates on the neck of the bottle. Carefully run a brush or sponge over the lid to capture all of its curves. The most inaccessible fractures can also be treated with a cotton swab. Rinse both parts under running water.
3. 3 Dry the bottle upside down. You can dry the flask by placing it upside down on a drying rack. So the water will drain completely, and the air will dry it from the inside. If you don't have a drying rack, you can simply wipe it off and leave it to dry on a kitchen towel.
4. 4 Use a dish cleaning tablet. If you need to disinfect the container, you can buy special tablets. They are handy for cleaning your flask if you are camping or hiking. Fill the bottle with water and drop the pill into it. Then wait about an hour before washing and drying the bottle.
5. 5 Place the bottle on the top rack of the dishwasher. You can put a Nalgene jar in the dishwasher, but keep the bottle and lid on the top wire rack away from the heating element, otherwise they will melt when exposed to high temperatures.

Method 2 of 3: Remove odors and stains

1. 1 Pour baking soda into the bottle. Baking soda will remove unusual odors and stains. This is especially useful when a sticky liquid such as juice was stored in the bottle. Measure out one quarter cup of baking soda and add it to the bottle.
2. 2 Add water. Pour about one-eighth of a cup of warm or hot water into the bottle. Hot tap water is fine for this, but do not use boiling water as it can melt the bottle.
3. 3 Shake the bottle. Screw the cap onto the bottle. Shake or shake to mix thoroughly. Now the solution is evenly distributed throughout the entire volume of the bottle.
4. 4 Rinse. Fill the bottle with clean tap water and then empty it. Repeat until all the baking soda is washed out of the bottle. A clean bottle must be thoroughly dried upside down on a drying rack.

Method 3 of 3: Getting rid of mold

1. 1 Pour the bleach into a bottle. A small amount of bleach will kill any mold that has grown inside the bottle. Measure out about half a teaspoon of bleach and pour it into the bottle.
2. 2 Add cool water. Cool water whitens the bottle much more effectively than warm or hot water.Pour water into the bottle up to the very neck and shake to mix the solution thoroughly.
3. 3 Leave the water in the bottle overnight. If there is really a lot of mold, you can leave the solution in the bottle overnight to soak it. Screw the cap back on and leave the bottle alone until the next day.
4. 4 Scrape off the mold. Sometimes it is enough to soak the bottle to remove the mold, but in some cases you need to rub it thoroughly to get rid of it. A brush should be used to clean out areas where there is mold.
   • If you find mold on the lid or hinge, dip a dish or bottle brush into the solution and wipe the mold well.
5. 5 Rinse. Pour the bleach solution into the sink and rinse the bottle with fresh water. To avoid swallowing some of the bleach, you can re-rinse the jar or put it in the dishwasher. The bottle must be completely dry before use.

Tips

• The bottle should be cleaned regularly after storing the water several times. Wash it after each use if it is used to store soda, milk, or juice.
