Skin tone, or skin tone, is completely different from skin color - which has only 3 color groups (white, dark, dark). Skin tone does not change whether you get a lot of sun exposure, or when your skin becomes white in winter and tanned in summer. There are 3 different skin tones - cold, hot, and neutral. Knowing your skin tone is very helpful - it helps you choose the right lipstick color, find the hair color that makes you stand out the most, and choose the color of your outfit to make you look great.

Steps

Method 1 of 6: Determine skin tone

  1. Wash your face, then wait 15 minutes. Your skin should be clean and free of makeup, cream or balancing water. The skin also needs to rest for about 15 minutes before the test, as the skin may turn red after being applied several times during the wash and it is difficult to see the true skin tone.

  2. Find natural light. Lighting can make skin look different - the skin will be yellow or green and affect the definition of skin tone. Choosing a sunny spot to find your skin tone will help you avoid misconceptions.
    • Try sitting by the window.
    • If you have an outdoor seat, go outside.

  3. See the color of the veins in the wrist. This is a quick way to determine skin tone if you can clearly see the veins. Place your hand at a source of natural light and see what color the veins show.
    • If the veins cannot be classified as green or blue, your skin is neutral in tone. When you have honey skin, your skin tone often falls into this category.
    • If the veins are green, your skin has a warm tone.
    • If the veins are blue or purple, you have cold skin tones.

  4. Observe the skin's response to sunlight. Is your skin prone to getting tanned? Is your skin sunburned or have freckles? The amount of melanin in the skin affects the skin's response to sunlight and helps you determine skin tone.
    • If your skin is prone to sunburn and is rarely sunburned, you have more melanin and hot or neutral skin tone.
    • If your skin is prone to sunburn and is not tanned, you have less melanin and have cold skin tones.
    • Some women with dark skin are not prone to sunburn but still have cold skin tone. Try some more tests to determine your skin tone.
  5. Keep a blank sheet of paper level with your face. Look in the mirror and see how your skin contrasts next to the white paper. The skin will be yellow, red or pink or without any of these colors and appear pale.
    • If your skin is yellow or pale when placed next to a white paper, you have a warm skin tone.
    • If it looks pink, rosy, or red, you have cold skin tone.
    • If your skin looks pale, you probably have honeyed skin with a neutral tone. The brown and golden tones of the skin combine to create this effect. You can see that the skin looks neutral and hot, as your skin tone is between these two ranges.
    • If you can't tell if your skin is yellow, honey, or pink, you have a neutral tone. Skin with neutral tones is suitable for foundation and hot / cold tones.
  6. Use gold foil and foil or metal to find the skin tone. Hold the yellow paper in front of you so it will reflect light on the skin. Observe if the yellow paper makes the face look pale or pale, or makes the skin appear fresher. Then, try with foil.
    • If it looks your best with yellow paper, you have warm skin tones.
    • If the reflection from the foil makes your skin brighter, you have cold skin tones.
    • If you don't see the difference (both foil and gold foil stand out), you have a neutral skin tone.
    • If you don't have gold foil or foil, try wearing gold and silver jewelry on your wrist, then see which one looks better.
  7. Ask a friend to observe the skin behind the ear. If your facial skin has acne, redness, or other medical condition that prevents you from seeing your skin tone clearly, ask a friend to look at the skin behind your ears, as this is a less affected area.
    • Have them check the skin next to the small fold behind the ear.
    • If your skin is yellow, you have hot skin tones.
    • If your skin is pink or rosy, you have cold skin tone.
    • If they find it hard to see, they can keep a blank sheet of paper near the skin. This will help them see whether their skin is yellow or pink.
  8. Eye color vision. Eye color can be very important for determining your skin tone. Light blue eyes and light brown eyes mean you have cool skin tones, while amber eyes have warm skin tones.
    • For example, blue eyes mean you have cool skin tone, while brown eyes mean you have hot skin tone.
