Lots of YouTube videos play paid ads up front and throughout the video for the purpose of monetizing and generating additional income. While viewing ads is also a great way to help the content creators you love, 15-30 second ads are also quite time consuming and frustrating. Fortunately, ad-blocking extensions are available on all web browsers to help you fix this problem. If you are on a mobile device, use your ad-blocker to ignore them.

Steps

Method 1 of 4: Chrome

1. 

   Click the Menu button (☰) and select "More tools" → "Extensions" (Extensions). This opens a new tab with your installed extensions.

   Click "Get more extensions" at the bottom of the list. This will open the Chrome app store.

   Find the keyword "ad block" and expand the results "Extensions". You'll see a list of extensions that can block ads, including YouTube ads.

   Review the results one at a time and select the most suitable extension. You will see a lot of search results. Find a widget with lots of good feedback. Note that some of the extensions have the same name but are different from the developer. Here are some popular options:
   • AdBlock
   • Adblock Plus
   • Adblock for YouTube
   • uBlock Origin

   Click the "Add to Chrome" button to install the extension. You are asked to confirm that you want to install this add-on.

   Try turning on the video on YouTube. Once installed, the new add-on will start working immediately. You will see the extension's logo to the right of the address bar. Go to YouTube and turn on the video to see if there are ads.
   • Some extensions require Chrome to restart to start working. You will be notified if you need to restart your browser.

   Check the extension settings if your YouTube videos are still playing ads. Extensions will typically block the YouTube pre-roll or billboard automatically. However, some utilities require you to manually activate this function.
   • Click the extension's logo next to the address bar and select "Options"> "Settings" or the wheel icon.
   • Find YouTube related settings and activate them. Check the area list in the "Filters" section of the Settings menu.

   Try using a different extension if the one you installed doesn't work. Chrome extensions are easy to install and uninstall, if the one you installed doesn't work, you can try another quickly.

Method 2 of 4: Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge

1. 

   Click the Tools menu or the Wheel icon and select "Manage add-ons" (Manage add-ons). If you don't see the menu bar, press the key Alt.
   • You can't add extensions on Microsoft Edge, and if you use Edge as your primary web browser, you can't block ads. You can use Internet Explorer every time you need to watch a video on YouTube.

   • If the installer is not working correctly, download the latest version from and try again.

   Start Internet Explorer and click "Enable" (Activated). You are prompted to confirm that you want to download Adblock Plus when you start Internet Explorer.

Method 3 of 4: Firefox

1. 

   Click the Menu button (☰) and select "Add-ons". Doing so opens the Extensions menu in a new tab.

   Click on "Get Add-ons" in the left menu. This will open Firefox's add-ons store.

   Find keywords "adblock". You will see many ad blocking extensions in the list of results.

   Try an ad-blocking extension. You have many options. Read the description and see the user feedback to find a utility that suits your needs. Most ad blockers automatically block YouTube ads without any additional setup. Here are some popular options:
   • Adblock Plus
   • AdBlock Ultimate
   • Adguard AdBlocker

   Click the "Install" button next to the extension you want to use. The add-on will be installed immediately, and it will only take a few seconds. You should see a new tab notifying that the add-on has been installed.

   Try watching YouTube videos. Once installed, the utility will be activated immediately. Try opening the video on YouTube to make sure the extension works properly.

Method 4 of 4: Android and iOS

   Start watching the video. If you watch the video in your browser, you won't see the ad.

   Install AdBlock on the rest of the devices (Android). If you want to block ads everywhere, including the YouTube app, you can install AdBlock on your Android device. This software requires you to manually configure and monitor, and only works when connected to Wi-Fi network.
