Dip-dye hair coloring is a trend among celebrities and stylists. You can either dye the ends of your hair in an ombre style, or go a step further and dye it a bold color. This article will tell you how you can dye your hair using the dip-dye technology.

Steps

Method 1 of 4: Part One: Choosing a Paint

1. 1 Buy bleach, brighten, or pre-brighten paint from a beauty supply store. You will need it to lighten the ends of the stripes; you will need pigmented paint later. If you already have blonde hair, you can skip this step.
   • If you just want to create an ombre look with blonde hair ends, you can buy the L'Oreal Paris' Ombre Brightening Kit. The tones can be slightly more subtle than using specially purchased lightening dye on dark hair separately.
2. 2 Order or find a bright color hair dye of your choice. If you want to dye the ends of your hair neon or another bright color, you can purchase the dye from online or beauty supply stores.
3. 3 Decide which part of your hair you want to dye. Dip-dye coloring can affect only the ends of the hair, or most of its length. However, it is a good idea to initially decide on the amount of paint you will use before starting the process.

Method 2 of 4: Part Two: Preparing the Space

1. 1 Place yourself or the person whose hair will be dyed where there is a mirror and a sink.
2. 2 Cover the floor and chair that will be used while working. Cover any objects that might be damaged by paint.
3. 3 Find a poncho or hair cover. If you don't have that, cut a hole in the trash bag so you can stick your head through it.
4. 4 Wrap an old hand towel around your neck. Secure it and put on a hair clipper or garbage bag.

Method 3 of 4: Part Three: Brighten the Ends

1. 1 Prepare a lightening dye or pre-lightening mixture according to the instructions that came with it.
2. 2 Comb through hair thoroughly with a flat comb or brush. Part your hair as you intend to wear it in the future.
3. 3 Divide your hair into sections to make it easier to apply the brightening color. Pin back the strands of hair until you are ready to dye them.
4. 4 Use a flattened comb or brush to apply the bleach paint to make sure it is applied evenly. Ask a friend to help apply the paint on the back so that it lies flat.
5. 5 Cover the ends of each section with aluminum foil. Spread the ends of your hair evenly over the foil square, then wrap it up.
   • You can also cover the ends of your hair with plastic bags. Secure them to your hair with hair ties.
6. 6 Leave the lightening dye on your hair for the time specified in the instructions. Set a timer to avoid overexposing the paint. Check your hair to see if it has lightened enough before rinsing off the dye.
7. 7 Rinse hair dye. The instructions may tell you to rinse off the dye and condition your hair.
   • Repeat the lightening process if you want to achieve an ombre look, but your hair is not lightened enough.

Method 4 of 4: Part Four: Dip-Dye Hair Coloring

1. 1 Prepare the coloring paint according to the instructions on the package. In some cases, the paint can be immediately ready for use.
2. 2 Divide the hair into sections again.
3. 3 Apply the color with a brush, gently applying it to the lightened parts of the hair.
4. 4 Wrap the strands in aluminum foil or plastic bags as you progress.
5. 5 Leave the dye on your hair for the time specified in the instructions. Check the color periodically to see if it is bright enough.
6. 6 Remove foil or bags.
7. 7 Rinse off the dye and condition the ends of your hair. You should not rinse off the conditioner immediately unless instructed to do so.
8. 8 Style your hair as usual.

Tips

• Get a deep penetration conditioner and shampoo specifically designed for colored hair. Lightening damages the ends of the hair and you will need to use a deep penetration conditioner to avoid split ends.
• Think carefully about what color you want to get, if you do not like the result, you will have to put up with it for a while.

Warnings

• Be careful when washing your hair in the shower. Paint can stain shower curtains and walls. Ask a friend to help you rinse off the paint in the shower to prevent splashing.
