This wikiHow article shows you how to add contacts to the Facebook Messenger app. You can do this by using the phone book contact, entering a specific phone number, or scanning the "Add" code of another Facebook Mesenger user. This is available on iPhone and Android versions of Facebook Messenger.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Add contact in phone book

1. 

   Open Facebook Messenger. Select the Messenger app icon with a lightning bolt in the speech bubble.
   • When prompted, enter your Facebook phone number and password to log in before you continue.

   Select a tab Home (Home page). This house-shaped icon is in the bottom left corner of the screen.

   Select the "Profile" icon. It's in the top left corner of the screen (iPhone) or the top right corner of the screen (Android).

   Choose People (Everybody). This option is in the lower center of the page.

   Sync phone contacts. If the contact sync feature is off, you will see a white on / off button (iPhone) or "Off" under the option Sync (Sync) (Android). Select the on / off button or Sync To enable contact sync, this will add any Messenger user in the contact list to your Messenger.
   • If you see a green on / off button (on an iPhone) or "On" under the item Sync (Android), phone contacts are synced with Messenger.
   • If you are using an iPhone, you must first allow your contacts to access Messenger. To do so, open it Settings (Settings), drag down, select Messenger, and select the on / off button Contacts (Contacts) is white to enable it.

Method 2 of 3: Add a phone number

1. 

   
   
   Open Facebook Messenger. Select the Messenger app icon with a lightning bolt in the speech bubble.
   • When prompted, enter your Facebook phone number and password to log in before you continue.

   Select the "People" tab. It is a cluster of horizontal lines located in the lower left corner of the screen (iPhone) or near the top right corner of the screen (Android).

   Choose +. This button is in the top-right corner of the screen (iPhone) or the bottom-right corner of the screen (Android). A window will appear.

   Choose Enter Phone Number (Enter your phone number). This option is on the screen. A text field will appear where you can enter a phone number.
   • Skip this step on Android.

   Enter a phone number. Click the text field, then use the on-screen keyboard to enter a phone number.

   Choose Save (Save). This button is in the top right corner of the window. This step searches for the Facebook username that matches the phone number.
   • On Android, just choose Add contact (Add contact) and skip to the next step.

7. 

   Add users. Choose Add (Add) to send a friend request to the person whose phone number you entered. If they agree, you will be able to chat with them on Facebook Messenger.
   • You can also send a message to this person, but they will have to accept the invitation in order to view the message.
   • If the phone number you entered doesn't match your Facebook profile, you can choose Invite to Messenger (Please use Messenger) to send an invitation to use the app to that person.

Method 3 of 3: Scan the code

1. 

   Open Facebook Messenger. Select the Messenger app icon with a lightning bolt in the speech bubble.
   • When prompted, enter your Facebook phone number and password to log in before you continue.

2. 

   Choose People (Everybody). It is a cluster of horizontal lines in the lower left corner of the screen.

3. 

   Choose Scan Code (Scan code on iPhone) or Scan Messenger Code (Scan Messenger codes on Android). This option is near the top corner of the screen. The code scan screen will appear.

   Ask a friend to get their code. To do so, they'll need to open a tab People (Everyone), choose Scan Code (Scan code), and select Next tab My Code (My code) in the top corner of the screen.

5. 

   Point the phone's camera at the code. The code should be in the center of the circle on your phone's screen.

6. 

   Choose ADD ON MESSENGER (ADD TO MESSENGER). You will find this button near the top of the screen. This step will add that person to your Messenger contact. advertisement

Advice

• By default, the Messenger contact list includes your Facebook friends. You can make friends on Facebook to add them to your Messenger list automatically.
• If you add a contact and they still don't agree to be friends, you can "wave" at them by clicking the button. Wave (Wave) to let them know that you want to chat without texting.
