By default, Windows Remote Desktop Connection can play the sound of a remote computer on the computer you use to access. If you have problems, you can check the appropriate options set by launching the Remote Desktop software, opening the advanced settings and selecting “Play on this device”. The same steps will apply whether you connect to your phone or a desktop computer. Don't forget to check that the computer / phone you are using is not muted!

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Using Remote Desktop mobile application

  1. Download and open the app Microsoft Remote Desktop. Click “Free” to download and select “Open” after the installation is complete.
    • Android and iOS versions of the app can be purchased on the respective store.
    • Android has a number of remote desktop apps with similar third-party features, such as RemoteToGo. However, these applications are not officially supported by Windows Remote Desktop Connection.

  2. Click the "+" sign at the bottom of the screen. The "Add Desktop" page will appear.
  3. Click “Advanced”. This button is at the top of the page, a list of optional settings will appear.

  4. Click the “Sound” drop-down menu and select “Play on this device”. You can also set up to play on the remote device or not to play the sound from within this menu.

  6. Enter credentials for the remote computer. Username will be the name or IP address of the computer you want to connect to, and password is the login password of that computer.
    • If you don't know the name of the computer, you can go to “Control Panel> All Control Panel Items> System” on that computer to see it.
    • You can find your computer's IP address by entering "ipconfig" in the command line on that computer.
    • Click the disk icon to save the remote desktop profile for future use.
  7. Click on “Connect”. This button is located at the bottom of the screen, connection to the remote computer will begin.
  8. Test the remote computer's audio. When the remote computer appears on the local computer screen, click the speaker icon in the lower right of the taskbar to open the audio control panel. After you adjust the volume appropriately, the change confirmation chime will ring for success. advertisement

Advice

  • Don't forget to check that the device you are using is not muted. You can either click the speaker icon in the lower right of the taskbar or use the volume buttons on the phone. Next, you need to check the sound of the remote computer using the remote desktop program in a similar way. If the computer is muted then you won't hear anything!
  • If the server or remote device is using a dedicated sound card (or external audio device), the device is likely to use its own volume controller. Please check the “Sound controllers” section in device manager to see what audio media is in use.
