You can connect the PS4 console (PlayStation 4) to Android or iPhone using the PlayStation app. This allows you to control your PS4 with your phone and even use it as a second monitor if the game supports it. You can also connect a USB drive to PS4 to play media files and back up important PS4 data.

Steps

Part 1 of 2: Connecting Smartphone with PlayStation App

1. 

   Get the PlayStation app for your smartphone.
   • You can download the app for free from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. To use the app, you'll need an iPhone or Android device.

   Connect the PS4 and smartphone on the same network.
   • The PS4 can be connected via a Wi-Fi network or an Ethernet cable. Both the PS4 and the phone must be on the same network.
   • You can check your PS4's settings by opening the Settings menu and selecting "Network". If the machine is plugged into the router via an Ethernet cable, just make sure the phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

   Open the Settings menu on PS4.
   • The option is to the right of the upper menu. Press the Up key on the main PS4 menu to open the menu above.

   Choose "PlayStation App Connection Settings".
   • Choose "Add Device" (Add device). Connection code will appear on the screen.

   Open the PlayStation app on your mobile device.
   • You do not need to be logged in with a PlayStation Network account to access your PS4.

   Click "Connect to PS4" (Connect to PS4).
   • Options are at the bottom of the screen.

   Tap on your PS4.
   • PS4 will show up on the Connect to PS4 screen on your phone with the word "Powered On" below. If the PlayStation doesn't show up, you need to check your system to make sure all the devices are connected on the same network. Press the Refresh button to rescan.

   Enter the code that PS4 displayed.
   • This 8-character code will allow your device to connect to your PS4.

9. 

   Connect to PS4.
   • After entering the code, you will be automatically connected to the PS4. You can start controlling your PS4 with your phone.

    Turn on PS4 controls by pressing "Second Screen".
    • Your device will turn into a controller that you can use to navigate the PS4 menu. You cannot use the controller as a gaming controller.
    • Swipe to move on the menu and tap on the phone screen to select.

    Turn on the second monitor feature (for specific games).
    • Some games allow you to use your phone as a second screen in your game. If the game supports this feature, tap the "2" icon at the top of the virtual PS4 console on your phone.

    Use your phone as the keyboard of the PS4.
    • After tapping the keyboard icon, you can use your phone as the keyboard of your PS4. This will make typing easier than using a controller.

13. 

    Turn off your PS4.
    • Once you're done playing, you can turn off your PS4 using the PS4 app on your phone. Close the "Second Screen" driver and click "Power". If by default the PS4 is set to turn off completely or go into Rest Mode, you will be prompted to do so.

Part 2 of 2: Using a USB drive

1. 

   Format the USB drive to work with the PS4.
   • You can use a USB drive to play media files or store data. In order for the PS4 to recognize the drive, you need to format the USB drive to work with the PS4. Most USB drives are pre-formatted properly. Formatting the USB will erase all existing data on it.
   • Right-click on the drive on the computer and choose "Format" to format. Then choose "FAT32" or "exFAT" as the file system.

   Create folders "MUSIC" (music), "MOVIES" (movies) and "PHOTOS" (pictures) on the drive.
   • PS4 can only read data on the drive according to the folder structure above. These directories should be the root directories on the USB drive.

   Copy the media you want to view to the corresponding folder.
   • Please copy music to MUSIC folder, videos to MOVIES folder and photos to PHOTOS folder.

   Plug the USB drive into your PS4.
   • Note: Due to the PS4's design, it will be difficult, even impossible, to plug in a larger USB.

   Open the "Media Player" application to play music and videos.
   • You can find the application in the Apps section of the Library.

   Select the USB drive to view the content.
   • You will be prompted to select a drive as soon as Media Player starts.

7. 

   Browse for the song or video you want to play.
   • Your content will be sorted by the folder you created earlier.

8. 

   Play media files.
   • After you select the song or video, the content starts playing. You can press the PlayStation button to return to the main PS4 menu while playing music in the background.

9. 

   Copy saved game data to USB.
   • You can use a USB drive to make a backup of your games.
   • Open the Settings menu and select "Application Save Data Management".
   • Select "Saved Data in System Storage" to find the saved data you want to back up.
   • Press the Options button and select "Copy to USB Storage".
   • Select the file you want to copy then click "Copy".

10. 

    Copy videos and screenshots of the game to USB.
    • You can use the USB drive to save the videos and screenshots of the games you have recorded.
    • Open the Capture Gallery application in the Library.
    • Find the content you want to copy to the USB.
    • Click the Options button and select "Copy to USB Storage."
    • Select the files you want to copy then click "Copy." The file will be copied onto the USB drive.
