Eyelash extensions look great and make your makeup routine much easier every morning. Take good care of them so that they keep looking good and you don't have to go back as often to get new ones on. They're easy to clean, but it's also important to avoid irritation, infection, blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid margin), and other problems that can affect eye health. All you need is a gentle cleanser, a comb and a good drying technique.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Cleaning your extensions

  1. Find a gentle cleanser. Find an oil and alcohol-free cleaner. Especially excessive amounts of oil can damage the glue that holds the lashes. Choose a foaming facial cleanser or soft facial soap. You can even use baby shampoo.
    • Be careful with baby shampoo as it can dry out the skin.
    • You can dilute a foaming cleanser with a little bit of water to make it softer.
    • Find a cleanser specifically for eyelash extensions.
  2. Clean your lashes. Wet your lashes with warm water. Put a little cleaner on your fingers and gently work it through your lashes and lids. Use an up and down motion. Avoid going back and forth or pulling your lashes so you don't lose extensions or damage your natural lashes. Rinse well with warm water.
    • Make sure you clean your lash line very well, because this is where most of the bacteria and other dirt particles collect.
  3. Do not use cotton wool and wipes. Do not use cotton balls to clean your eyelashes.Particles of this can get stuck in the eyelashes, which must then be removed very carefully. Also do not use cleaning wipes; these can loosen or tear your extensions.

Method 2 of 3: Drying and combing

  1. Let your lashes dry naturally. Gently dry your face with a towel after washing, but avoid your eyes to protect your lashes. To help your eyelashes dry earlier, wrap some toilet paper around your finger and gently pat your eyelashes dry.
    • If you want to be extra careful, let your lashes sit against the toilet paper for a few seconds to let the water absorb.
  2. Blow dry them. Turn your hair dryer on its coolest setting. Now dry your eyelashes with the hair dryer, about ten seconds per eye. Make sure you hold the hair dryer an arm's length from your face. Don't do this too often so that the glue stays on your extensions.
  3. Comb them out. Close one eye. Use a clean, dry mascara brush to gently brush through your lashes, using a rolling motion. Now fluff out the lashes a bit with the brush. Do not pull the brush through the roots of your lashes.

Method 3 of 3: Maintain your extensions

  1. Clean your extensions regularly. Take the time to clean your extensions at least a few times a week, or even daily. Remove bits of dirt from your lashes between washes by using a little warm water and combing. Do this by wetting your lashes with a little bit of warm water and then very gently comb them through.
  2. Keep your lashes free from oil. Do not allow greasy / moist products such as shampoos, conditioners, glycerine and (heavy) creams to get to your eyelashes or lash line to keep the glue in good condition. For example, tilt your head back while in the shower to keep these products out of your eyes. Also try dabbing a thin line of 70% isopropyl alcohol on your lash line once a week to rub away the oil that builds up when you sweat.
  3. Do not rub your eyes. Don't tug or rub your lashes. This will loosen them up and make them look lumpy if you're not careful. This also allows your natural lashes to be pulled out. Have your extensions removed professionally if they are itchy or otherwise irritate you very much.
  4. Use eye makeup with care. Avoid cream eyeshadows. Use powder eyeshadow as normal, paying particular attention to the corners of the eyes during application. Do not use liquid eyeliner; this can damage your extensions. Never use mascara. This will damage your extensions and make them look and feel crusty.
