If you have naturally blonde hair, congratulations - you belong to only 2% of the world's population with blonde hair. However, blonde hair can darken over time. If you want to keep beautiful blonde hair as long as possible, there are a number of natural remedies and products from the store that can help you with that.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Avoid a copper tone and a green glow

  1. Use a purple shampoo. At beauty salons and drug stores, you can purchase a variety of purple shampoos that counteract copper tones in blonde hair. A purple shampoo is so named because it has a purple color.
    • A copper tone means that your blonde hair has gotten an ugly yellow or orange glow. This happens when the blue molecules in the hair start to fade, making the yellow and orange molecules more visible.
    • A purple shampoo restores the blue pigment in the hair and helps to prevent a copper tone.
  2. Install a filter for your shower head. The minerals in tap water can give your natural blonde hair a stronger copper tone due to iron deposits. Water with chlorine in it, such as pool water, can also give your hair a green tint.
    • Installing a filter for your shower head prevents these color-changing minerals from being absorbed by your hair and preserves your natural hair color.
  3. Use a toner. If your hair gets a copper tone, make an appointment with the hairdresser for a toner treatment or buy a toner at the drugstore and treat your hair yourself.
    • Toner creates more blue and purple tones in your hair and mutes the orange and yellow tones, so that the copper tone disappears.
    • You usually pay around 30 to 40 euros for a toner treatment at the hairdresser.
    • Hair toner costs around 10 euros at the drugstore, but may not work as well as a treatment at the hairdresser.
  4. Wet your hair before swimming. By spraying your hair with tap water or filtered water before swimming, your hair will not absorb the chlorine in the pool water.
    • Make sure the water you use to spray your hair does not contain much chlorine or this step is of no use. Know that tap water in the Netherlands does not contain chlorine.
  5. Use an acidic hair rinse to counteract a green glow. If your hair starts to get a green glow after swimming in the pool, or because your shower water contains a lot of copper, you can reduce the green glow with an acidic hair rinse. An acidic hair rinse removes all old remnants of hair styling products and mineral deposits that can change your hair color.
    • Mix 120 (for shorter hair) to 250 ml (for longer hair) apple cider vinegar with 500 ml water. After shampooing, rinse your hair with the vinegar mixture and leave it on for about 5 minutes. Rinse your hair again and style it as usual.
    • Dissolve 6-8 tablets of aspirin in a glass of warm water and rinse your hair with the mixture. Leave the mixture on for 10-15 minutes and then rinse your hair.

Method 2 of 2: Keep your hair naturally light

  1. Apply lemon juice and sit in the sun. To avoid darkening your hair, mix equal parts pure lemon juice and water or olive oil and spray the mixture on your hair. Diluting the juice with water or olive oil will not dry out your hair, although it may take longer for this method to work.
    • Sit outside in the sun for an hour and the lemon juice will naturally lighten your hair.
    • Treat your hair with conditioner afterwards, as lemon juice can dry out your hair.
    • Treat your hair with lemon juice several times a week until it gets the shade you want.
  2. Apply hydrogen peroxide and sit in the sun. Hydrogen peroxide, like lemon juice, can help lighten your hair, especially if you sit in the sun with it.
    • Fill an atomizer with hydrogen peroxide.
    • Spray the hydrogen peroxide into your hair.
    • Go outside and let your hair dry in the sun.
    • Use conditioner afterwards, as hydrogen peroxide can dry out your hair.
    • Perform the treatment weekly until your hair has gotten the desired shade.
  3. Rinse your hair with chamomile tea. Chamomile tea - the same drink you drink - gives your hair a warm golden glow when you rinse your hair with it.
    • Boil about 500 ml of water and add 5 tea bags of chamomile tea.
    • Let the tea bags steep for 15-20 minutes.
    • Let the tea cool down.
    • After you have washed your hair with shampoo and conditioner, pour the tea on your hair or fill an atomizer with the tea and spray the tea on your hair.
    • Let the tea sit in your hair and let your hair air dry.
    • Do this every day until your hair has gotten the desired shade.
  4. Make a mask with chamomile tea. If you prefer a slightly more intensive treatment, you can treat your hair with a mask instead of a chamomile tea rinse.
    • Boil about 250 ml of water and add 4 tea bags of chamomile tea.
    • Let the tea bags steep for 15-20 minutes.
    • Let the tea cool down.
    • Mix about 2 tablespoons of plain natural yogurt with the tea. Use two tablespoons if your hair is medium length and less if your hair is shorter. Use more if your hair is longer.
    • Apply the mask and cover your hair with a shower cap, plastic wrap, or a towel if you don't have anything else.
    • Leave the mask on for an hour and then wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner as usual.
    • Do this once or twice a week until your hair has gotten the desired shade.
  5. Add cinnamon to your conditioner. Cinnamon can lighten your hair naturally and will not damage your hair.
    • Grind 3 tablespoons of cinnamon. It's best to use freshly ground cinnamon, but if you can't grind your own, you can use store-bought ground cinnamon.
    • Mix the cinnamon with a few tablespoons of conditioner. Stir in the cinnamon well.
    • Apply the mixture on your hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap, plastic wrap, or a towel if you don't have anything else. Leave the mixture on for four hours or overnight.
    • The next day, wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner as usual.
    • Do this several times a week until your hair has gotten the desired shade.
  6. Add honey to your conditioner. Honey can naturally lighten your hair without damaging it. It is also good for your hair and scalp. However, honey does not lighten your hair as quickly as many other products.
    • Mix 80 ml of honey with 60 ml of conditioner. Mix everything well.
    • Apply the mixture on your hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap, plastic wrap, or a towel if you don't have anything else. Leave the mixture on for four hours or overnight.
    • The next day, wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner as usual.
    • Repeat the treatment to get the desired shade.

Tips

  • The lighter your hair is, the better you have to protect it against UV rays. This is especially true in the summer when the sun power is strongest. Use a spray or serum that protects your hair from UV rays so that your hair is not damaged.
