If you have Word 2007 or higher, you can use this program to edit scanned text, which is a lot faster than retyping everything. To activate this function and convert a scanned document into editable text, follow the steps in the article below.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Activate Document Imaging

First check whether all necessary programs are present in your Office installation. If you have Office 2010 or higher, you will first have to download and install Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer.

  1. View the list of installed programs in Control Panel.
    • Windows 7 or Vista: Go to Control panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
    • Windows XP: Go to Control panel > Add or Remove Programs > Remove a Program.
  2. Select your version of Microsoft Office and then click Change. Your version of Word may be part of Microsoft Office or it may just be called Microsoft Office Word.
  3. click on Add or remove features and then on Get on.
  4. Clap Office utilities and then click Microsoft Office Document Imaging and select Run all from my Computer.
  5. click on Continuous and then wait for the configuration to complete.

Method 2 of 2: Convert a scanned document to editable text

  1. Scan and open the document in Paint. To scan, follow the intermediate steps described below. Otherwise, open the scanned file with Paint and proceed to Step 2.
    • Go to File > From Scanner or Camera to start the scan.
    • Choose the settings most suitable for your document and press Scan. Because you are mainly interested in the text, Black and white picture or text probably the most convenient.
  2. Go to File > Save or Save As.
  3. Select TIFF from the drop-down menu and press Save. You can now quit Paint if you want.
  4. Open Microsoft Office Document Imaging. Go to Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Tools and select it from the list, or just search for "microsoft office document imaging."
  5. Open the .tiff file. Just go to File > Open and find the file you saved.
  6. Test CTRL + A to select all and CTRL + C to copy. This will enable text recognition.
  7. Open a blank Word document and press CTRL + V to paste.
  8. Correct any misspelled words.

Tips

  • Text is converted much better than shapes (with boxes, etc.), which lose their design.
