Have you forgotten your PIN code or lock pattern of your HTC smartphone? Android has built in a way to bypass the lock, if you remember your Google account information. If that does not work, you can reset the device to the factory settings as a last resort. Either way, in either case, you only need a few minutes to regain access to your phone.

Method 1 of 2: Log in with your Google account

1. Try the PIN or pattern five times. To bypass the lock, you must first try to unlock five times. The phone will lock again, and then the option to login in another way will appear.
2. Tap "Forgot password" or "Forgot pattern". Tapping this button will open the login screen of your Google account. Now you can try to log in with the username and password associated with your phone.
   • This method does not work with some providers. After a certain number of incorrect entries, the SIM card will be blocked. After that, there is no possibility to log in with your Google account.
3. Enter the details of your Google account. Enter your Google username and password. This must be the account you used when you first set up the phone. If you can't remember your Google password, you can create a new password by trying to log in to a Google website on your computer.
   • Make sure you are connected to a cellular network or WiFi. To log in with this method, the phone must be connected to the internet. When flight mode is activated, press and hold the power button until the menu appears. Tap the airplane logo to turn flight mode off.
4. Set a new password. If you are logged in, you can set a new way of locking so that you can use and lock your device safely. You do this by first tapping the Settings app, then you can choose whether you want to lock with a PIN, pattern or password.

Method 2 of 2: Reset the phone

1. Turn off the phone. To access the recovery menu, you must start by turning off your phone. Press and hold the power button until the "Power options" menu appears. Tap "Power Off" to turn off the phone. Resetting your phone will erase all data on the phone so only do this as a last resort.
   • If the phone is frozen, you can turn off the phone by removing the battery.
2. Open the recovery menu. Press and hold the volume down button and press the power button at the same time. Hold down both buttons for about 30 seconds. As soon as the Android logo appears, you can release the buttons.
3. Do a factory reset. Use the volume down button to move through the menu. Select "Factory Reset" and press the Power button to continue. The reset process will take a few minutes.
   • Selecting "Factory reset" will erase all data stored on the phone.
4. Log in and set up your phone. After the factory reset, you will be asked to set up your phone, just like when you turned on the phone for the first time. If you log in with the Google account that was already linked to your phone, and if you had automatic backups taken, your settings will be restored.
   • You can redownload apps that you purchased from the Play Store, provided you use the same account that you used to purchase the apps.
   • All contacts stored in Google Contacts are automatically synchronized with your account.

Tips

• This is only recommended if your phone is locked and you are sure that you will not be able to retrieve the password as you will be starting from scratch.
