Trash is a simple card game that can be played at almost any age. Play it with children to teach them numbers or with adults to pass the time. For two players you need a standard deck of cards. With three players you need two games.Add an extra deck of cards for every two additional players. You also need a flat surface on which to spread your cards. The object of the game is to collect a set of cards from Ace to 10, including jokers. Trash is a flexible game that you can play just a few rounds, or the full ten rounds.

To step

Part 1 of 3: Preparing for the game

  1. Shuffle one or more standard decks of cards. With two players, a card game is sufficient. With three or more players you need two decks of cards. With five or more players you need at least three decks of cards. Shuffle all the cards and put them in a pile. Leave the jokers in play.
  2. Deal ten cards to each player. Don't look at the cards. Deal one card at a time to each player until everyone has ten cards. Make sure you show the cards face down. A variation on this game uses only eight cards, with the cards in two rows of four.
    • If you have enough space, you can place the cards in a single row of ten, instead of two rows of five.
  3. Place your cards in two horizontal rows with five cards each. You can place the cards in any order as long as they stay face down on the table and you don't look at them. This set is your starting hand, but all of your cards will be moved, replaced, or discarded during the game.
  4. Make the pot and discard pile. When everyone has ten cards, place the rest of the deck face down in the center of the playing field. This pile is now the pot. Take the top card from the pot and place it face up next to it. This is the start of the discard pile.

Part 2 of 3: Play your turn

  1. Draw a card and put it in the right place. Draw a card from the pot or the discard pile. If this is a card from Ace to 10, put the card in the right place. An ace is placed at the top left, and the rest goes up to 10. So a 10 is at the bottom right. Pick up and hold the original card from that place until the next step that explains what to do with it.
    • Jokers and kings both count as joker, and can therefore be placed anywhere. If you later pick up a number with a joker, you can exchange these cards.
    • If you take a card that has nowhere to go (including Jacks and Queens, both of which are worthless), place this card on the discard pile and the turn passes to the next player.
  2. Look at the card from your original set and place it in the right place. If you took and placed your first card, now look at the card that was previously in that spot. If you can put it in one of the remaining spots, do this.
    • For example, if you take a two and put it in second place, and if there is a three in that spot, you can put it in third place.
    • Keep exchanging your original cards until nothing more fits. For example, you placed the two and the three, but there is a jack in third place. Then place the jack on the discard pile and give the next player's turn.
  3. Discard any card you cannot play. If you take a card whose space is already occupied, discard the card. If you take a card from your original set that you can't put anywhere else, discard it.

Part 3 of 3: The gameplay and how to win

  1. End the round. Once a player has filled all ten spaces with Ace to 10 (including jokers), this player calls "Trash" and the round is over. At that point, any other player may take one more card and try to complete his or her set. Anyone who succeeds in this can advance to the next level in the next round.
    • You may still place the original cards in the correct place on this turn, just like during the rest of the game.
  2. Collect all cards and deal for the next round. Collect everyone's cards, the pot and the discard pile. Shuffle all the cards. Now deal nine cards to the winner of the first round and the other players who had a complete set in the first round. The players who did not have a full set receive ten cards again.
    • Each round that a player completes the set, he or she gets one less card in the next round.
  3. Finish the game. Continue playing the rounds using the pattern explained above until a player is dealt only one more card. This player must now fill that space with an ace or joker. If this succeeds and the player says "Trash", the game is over.
    • You don't have to play all ten rounds. You can also play a shorter game, for example until a player gets six cards and fills all six spots.
