Straight, shiny hair is always in fashion and luckily for those with curly or wavy hair, there are several ways to straighten your hair yourself. A flat iron works, but heating it too often can damage your hair. Try the following more subtle methods for loosening up your curls and achieving a straight cut.

To step

Method 1 of 4: Straight wash and dry your hair

  1. Buy hair products to straighten your hair. There are shampoos and conditioners to remove curls. You can find these products in any drugstore or beauty shop, or ask the hairdresser which one is best to use.
    • Read the list of ingredients of the shampoo and conditioner carefully. Make sure that alcohol is not the main ingredient, as this will dry out your hair and make straightening more difficult.
    • You can also purchase a straightener or leave-in conditioner to straighten your hair follicles.
  2. Tie your hair in two parts. Divide the washed and combed hair into 2 equal parts. Use soft fabric hair ties to tie your hair together.
    • Start by placing the first hair tie at the base of the skull.
    • Place a second binder directly below the first. The two binders should be touching.
    • Continue this until the entire section of your hair, up to the ends, is wrapped. Repeat this for the rest of your hair.

Tips

  • Washing with cold water ensures shiny hair.
  • Be careful with hair combing while the hair is still wet. You can stretch and break your hair with it. If you have to, use a detangler and a wide comb.
  • Do not tie your hair together or braid it after a wash or you may create waves in your hair again.
  • Wash your hair in the afternoon, not in the evening, so that there is enough time to let your hair dry before going to sleep.
  • Let the hair air dry and comb occasionally.
  • Never use products that heat your hair, as they cause split ends and dry hair.
  • Do not use a paddle brush. This can damage your hair and cause split ends. Instead, use a wide-tooth comb with a detangler (optional).
  • Dampen your hair. Create a low ponytail. Put in hair bands every 5cm. Let them sit all night, then take them out in the morning and brush your hair.
  • Don't let your hair get damp.
  • Let the hair air dry and lie down without moving too much.
  • Comb your hair while it is still wet.

Warnings

  • Methods of getting straight hair without heating are not as effective on extremely curly hair. It is then more likely that you will end up with a shiny blow in your hair.
  • Do not dry your hair up, as this will provide extra volume.
