One of the features of newer Apple devices that has a lot to do is Siri, an app that can run questions and commands and tell you what information you need. While the iPhone is in the spotlight when it comes to Siri, you can also take full advantage of Siri on your new iPad.

To step

Part 1 of 3: Activating Siri

  1. Make sure you have an iPad compatible with Siri. Siri is available on the iPad 3 and later. It is not available on the first iPad or the iPad 2. You need an internet connection to use Siri. If you have an older iPad and still want to use voice commands such as Siri, click here.
    • You can try to jailbreak an older iPad to install the files from Siri, but there is no small chance that this won't work. Jailbreaking makes your warranty expire immediately and can be very cumbersome, especially with the newer versions of iOS.If you still want to try it, click here.
  2. Open the Settings app on your iPad.
  3. Tap on "General".
  4. Tap "Siri".
    • If you do not have an option for Siri in the General menu, then your device is too old and does not support Siri.
  5. Set Siri to "ON". There are several options for customizing Siri.
    • You can choose the voice of a man or a woman.
    • You can also select another language for Siri, including Spanish, French, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, German, Italian, and Korean.
  6. Activate "Hey Siri" (iOS 8 only). Activating this function ensures that you can start the app by saying the words "Hey Siri", as long as your iPad is connected to the charger. This can be useful when your iPad is on your desk or next to your bed, charging.
    • Some users have reported that this feature does not work properly and reliably. If you are experiencing problems with the function, it might be better to turn it off completely.

Part 2 of 3: Using Siri

  1. Press and hold Home to activate Siri. You will hear a beep and Siri's interface will open.
  2. Ask Siri a question or not a voice command. Siri will then search the web, change your settings, and open apps for you without you having to do it yourself. If you want an overview of the possible commands, you can tap the question mark "?" icon and scroll through the command menu.
    • Speak loud and clear and slowly at first until Siri recognizes your voice better. If you speak too fast or too softly, Siri will be less able to interpret your commands.
  3. Using Siri for general iPad navigation. You can open Siri apps, play music, start a FaceTime call, send emails, find businesses, and a lot more. Here are some basic commands to get you started:
    • “Open Camera” (If you have multiple camera apps installed, you will be asked to choose one).
    • “Launch Facebook” (You can use any app on your iPad with this command).
    • "Play song / artist / genre on iPad>"
    • Play / Skip / Pause
    • "Play iTunes Radio"
    • "Check email"
    • "New email to name>"
    • “Find pizza near me”
    • Find the nearest gas station
  4. Use Siri to change your settings and preferences. You can use Siri to change most of your iPad's settings, so you don't have to search for the settings menu and options yourself. Some of the more useful commands are:
    • Turn on Wi-Fi
    • Turn on Do Not Disturb
    • Turn up / down brightness
    • Turn on flashlight
    • Turn on Bluetooth
    • Change text size
  5. Use Siri to search the web. By default, Siri will search the Internet through the Bing search engine. If you prefer to search via Google, add the word "Google" to your search terms. You can also search for images.
    • Search the web for -----
    • "Search Google for -----"
    • "Search for images of -----"
  6. Manage your calendar with Siri. Siri can add dates to your calendar, change them, and provide you with information about your appointments and dates.
    • “Set up meeting with name> at
    • ”Reschedule my appointment with name> to date>“
    • “Cancel the meeting with name>”
    • "When is my next meeting?"
  7. Go to Wikipedia using Siri. When you search Wikipedia with Siri, you will see the introductory image (if there is one) and the first paragraph. To read the entire article, tap the result.
    • "Tell me about -----"
    • "Search Wikipedia for -----"
  8. Use Siri to browse Twitter. You can use Siri to reply to tweets from a specific user, browse topics, or check out what's going on.
    • "What's username> saying?"
    • “Search Twitter for -----”
    • "What are people saying about -----?"
  9. Ask Siri for directions. Siri works with your maps to give you directions where to find locations you specify. You can give a variety of commands related to navigation and ask questions about travel time and locations.
    • "How do I get home?"
    • Show directions to location>
    • Take me to the nearest ATM
  10. Experiment with assignments. Siri has a huge list of commands, with more becoming available with each iOS update. Try asking Siri questions to see what results you get. Often you don't even have to mention an entire phrase, just the keywords of your search query. Siri is especially useful when it comes to automating everyday tasks on your iPad, such as texting, browsing, and emailing to get the most out of it.

Part 3 of 3: Getting Siri-like functionality on an iPad / iPad2

  1. Download and install third-party speech recognition software. One of the most powerful and popular programs for iOS devices is Dragon Go!
    • Dragon Go! can be used in conjunction with a variety of other apps, such as Google, Yelp, Spotify, and many more.
    • The Dragon Diction add-on offers you the possibility to create a text message with your voice.
  2. Press and hold the Home button to enter Dragon Go! to activate. This works the same way as Siri.
  3. Speak your command. Dragon Go! has a wide range of voice commands, and can do almost everything Siri can do. Try out various commands to see if you like it.
  4. Use the Google Search app. This app also has the ability to work with voice commands. Tap the button with the picture of a microphone (in the search bar) to start speech recognition. This will not work with apps from Apple, but you can use it to search the web and in conjunction with other Google apps.

Tips

  • You can ask Siri to call you by a different name, if you want, or if you want Siri to remember that someone is a family member or your partner so you can quickly send them a message.
  • Siri can be started by pressing and holding Home from any application and even from the lock screen.

Warnings

  • When you try to call, email, or send a message to a person with a name that is listed multiple times in the address book or similar to the name of other contacts, Siri will ask you to confirm which contact you are referring to. Make sure you speak clearly to avoid contacting the wrong person.
  • Make sure you speak clearly towards the top of your iPad (where the microphone is) for best results.

Necessities

  • Compatible iPad with iOS 6 or higher
  • Internet connection
