This wikiHow teaches you how to take a screenshot on your Windows computer. On a computer with Windows 8 or 10 you can use keyboard shortcuts to automatically take and save a screenshot of the entire screen. Method 1 of 7: Take a full screen screenshot in Windows 8 and 10

  1. Find the "Print screen" key on your keyboard. The test ⎙ Print Screen is usually located in the top right corner of the main part of the keyboard (not counting the number pad if your keyboard has one) and usually has the text "SysReq" (System Requirements) below it.

Method 7 of 7: Using a Windows tablet

  1. Go to the screen you want to take a screenshot of. Before you can take a screenshot, you need to make sure that the screen you want to take a screenshot of is on your tablet without distractions like open windows and programs.
  2. Hold your finger on the Windows logo. This logo is located on the frame of your tablet. You are not supposed to use the Windows button on your desktop.
    • If you don't have a Windows button on your tablet, press the Power button.
  3. Press the button to decrease the volume (or increase the volume if using the Power button). The screen will dim for a moment to confirm that a screenshot is being taken.
    • Your screenshot will be saved in the Screenshots folder, which you can find by opening Windows Explorer and going to Pictures → Screenshots.

Tips

  • In Microsoft OneNote you can click ⊞ Win+S. to make a rectangular cutout of your screen. Doing this will make your screenshot appear as an image in OneNote. You can also use this function in Windows XP, which has no Snipping Tool.
  • If you have a laptop, it may be that the test ⎙ PrtScr combined with another test. That means you press a Function key or on Fn to take a screenshot. This key is usually located on the bottom row of the keyboard.
  • Make sure your image is no larger than the file size limit if you want to upload your screenshot to a website.
  • Not all versions of Windows have the Snipping Tool. If your version of Windows does not have the Snipping Tool, you can also use this free Clone of the Snipping Tool.

Warnings

  • Some file formats (such as bitmaps) make the file of your screenshot very large. It is therefore strongly recommended to choose PNG or JPEG.
  • You cannot take a screenshot of content playing with Windows Media Player.
