Does that Facebook friend drive you crazy who keeps telling you what he just ate? Or are you friends with someone you no longer have anything to do with and with whom you would have nothing to do in real life for a long time? If you find unfriending too much, but you want to change something, read this article. We tell you how to unfriend someone without actually unfriending them.

To step

1. Hide someone's posts by setting you to stop seeing them on your news feed. Go to a message from the person in question and mouse over the message. A small gray "x" or "v" will now appear in the top right corner. Click on this and select "Hide ...".
   • If the message is hidden, more options will appear. Click on "Change what information you see from ..." and choose the settings you want.
2. Become invisible to someone (or partially invisible) if that person provides annoying comments on your posts or photos. Maybe they mean well, but they don't understand how annoying it is for you. You can adjust your privacy settings so that they no longer see (some of) your messages.
   • Click on "Privacy Settings" under the gear icon at the top right. Click next to "Who can see your future posts?" on "Edit". Click on the drop-down menu below the sample message and select "Custom".
     
     
   • Type the friend's name under "Don't share this with".
     
     
3. Stop a friend from chatting with you. They can still send you messages, but they just go to your inbox instead of seeing them right away in a chat window.
   • Go to the gear icon at the bottom right of the chat window and click on "Advanced Settings".
     
     
   • Type the friend's name under "Enable chat for all friends except ..."
     
     

Warnings

• Sometimes it's better to really unfriend someone, especially if someone is mean. Even then, they can still send you messages unless you block someone.
• The friend in question will not notice that he / she is no longer visible on your news feed or if you have changed something else. But they might find out if you have the same friends and they are very observant. For example, a friend can say something about one of your photos, which the other friend will see. If that friend then clicks through to your photo, a message appears that he / she is not allowed to see that photo. Then they will suspect something.
