Eye makeup largely determines how natural or dramatic you look. Whether you want to learn how to properly apply your everyday makeup or how to look great for a special occasion, here's how to do it successfully.

To step

Method 1 of 1: Basic technique

  1. Start with a clean surface. Before you start, wash your face with a mild facial cleanser. Make sure to remove any mascara and eyeliner residue. If you find it difficult to remove eye makeup residue, use cool water or a regular facial cleanser with a cotton swab. If you suffer from dry skin or eczema, apply a little face cream under your eyes, the areas next to the corner of your eye and your temple. Do not put face cream on your eyelids as this will make them greasy and cause the makeup you apply to come off.
    • Apply primer to your eyelids. (This is optional.) Primer smoothes your skin and allows makeup to adhere to something. If you've decided to use a primer, spread it all over your eyelid up to your brow bone.
  2. Smooth out the skin around your eyes. Apply concealer if you have puffiness and at the inner corner of your eye and the beginning of your nose. (If you are going to buy a concealer make sure you can test it. Put some concealer on the inside of your wrist and buy the concealer that best camouflages your veins.) Use your fingers or a concealer brush to blot out the make up towards your cheekbones and nose. Set the concealer by applying a loose, skin-colored powder over it with a brush. Also put some powder on your eyelids.
  3. Apply eyeshadow. You can use one or more colors. Here is a basic plan with three colors.
    • Apply the medium shade (the one between the lightest and darkest) on your lid. Your eyelid covers the part of your face from your lash line to the crease in your eye. Choose a medium pink, light brown, or other medium color for this area.
    • Use a light color for your brow bone. Most people have a spot under their eyebrows that is clearly visible. Highlight this area and give it more light by applying a pearly white, light gold or other delicate color to match the medium shade you chose for your eyelid.
    • Apply a dark color to the crease of your eye. Use light short strokes to apply small amounts of dark eyeshadow powder in the crease of your eye. Start at the fold in the outer corner of your eye and work inward until you are about 2/3 of the way to the inside of your eye. Try a purple, brown, or other dark color that goes with the other two colors.
  4. let the colors blend together. If you've used more than one color, use your fingers or a loose fanned brush to blend the colors together a bit.
  5. Put on eyeliner. You can use a liquid eyeliner, an eyeliner pencil or even a wet eyeshadow that you apply with a thin brush to apply eyeliner. Whatever you choose, make very small controlled movements on your upper lash line while applying a dotted line. Go back and fill in the space between the dots with more little strokes. If you want to create more drama, make a line below your lower lash line as well.
  6. Curl your lashes. Clip your top lashes between an eyelash curler. Hold the curler for about 5 seconds. The easiest way to clamp the eyelashes is to close your eye halfway. Remember: always curl your lashes before applying mascara, never after.
  7. Put on mascara. You can put on a lot or a little and there are many different brands and ways to vary in volume, length and style. Find a product that you are happy with. Start at the beginning of your upper lash line and slowly work your way up. If you want a more dramatic effect, apply mascara to the lower lashes as well. If you want to apply several coats, make sure the first coats of mascara are still wet - applying a new coat while the previous coat is still dry will make it lumpy.

Tips

  • Rinse off all your makeup before going to bed.
  • Practice makes perfect. Don't expect it to work out perfectly the first time.
  • A beautifully shaped eyebrow picks up all eye make-up.
  • Take your time and do not rush because then you will achieve a less good result and make more mistakes, so you may have to start over.
  • Consider buying a small set of eye makeup brushes to make it easier to apply eye makeup.
  • Practice the makeup you want to put on for a special occasion in advance so that you can be sure of yourself when the occasion comes.
  • Apply white eyeliner to the inside of your lower lash line to make your eyes look bigger.
  • Fill in the space between your top lashes (the "waterline") with black eyeliner to make your lashes look fuller. Pull your eyelid slightly to pull it up for easy access. If you draw a line with a skin-colored pencil on your bottom waterline, your eyes will appear larger.
  • Use mascara and eyeliner specially designed for certain eye colors. These really help make your eyes pop more.
  • You can easily remove eye make-up with a cotton ball that you smear with petroleum jelly. If you don't have this, you can always use baby oil and a tissue.
  • Ask family and friends for tips on buying and applying eye makeup.
  • If you don't want to curl eyelashes or apply mascara, you can also apply false eyelashes or have eyelash extensions applied.
  • If you don't have an eyelash curler, you can use the back of a spoon and an eyelash comb.

Warnings

  • Don't try to get makeup in your eye.
  • Applying eyeliner to your waterline is not recommended by ophthalmologists.
