This article teaches you how to unlock locked objects, layers, and elements in master pages in Adobe InDesign, so you can move and edit them.

Method 1 of 3: Unlock objects

  1. Open a file in Adobe InDesign. Double-click the pink app with the letters "Id", then click "File" in the menu bar, then click "Open ...". Select a document with a locked object and click "Open".
  2. Click on the Selection tool. This is the black arrow at the top of the Toolbox on the left of your screen.
  3. Click on the object you want to unlock.
    • If you want to select multiple objects, hold Ctrl (Windows) or (Mac) while clicking the objects you want to unlock.
  4. click on Object in the menu bar at the top of your screen.
  5. click on Unlock. The selected objects can now be moved and edited in the document.
    • Click "Unlock all on spread" to unlock all objects on the current spread (page).

Method 2 of 3: Unlock layers

  1. click on Window in the menu bar.
  2. click on Layers. This will open the Layers panel on the right side of the program.
  3. Click on the lock next to the layer you want to unlock. The lock will disappear and the layer is now unlocked.
    • If you want to unlock all layers at once, click click on Window in the menu bar.
    • click on Pages. This will open the Pages panel on the right side of the program.
    • Unlock the master page you want to unlock. You do this through Ctrl+⇧ Shift (Windows) or +⇧ Shift (Mac) while clicking the master page thumbnail in the Pages panel.
      • Unlock elements on a master page if you want to edit the elements that are normally the same on every page, such as page number, section, and publication date. Select the "Pages" tab in the Pages panel.
      • If you want to unlock all master pages at once, click Image titled Android7dropdown.png’ src= in the top-right corner of the Pages panel, and then click "Overwrite all master items".
