By washing your new towels well, they stay clean and new for longer. Before using your new towels, it is important that you wash them in the washing machine to remove any dirt or residue on the fabric. After the first wash, try to keep washing the towels twice a week and avoid things that can damage them, such as fabric softeners and tumble dryers. Keeping a few simple rules in mind can help your new towels last longer.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Wash towels the first time

  1. Wash your new towels before using them. New towels can have a chemical finish, and they can contain dirt and bacteria from the store shelf. Thoroughly washing your new towels will remove these things, so your towels will be clean when you first use them. EXPERT TIP

Check the washing instructions on the clothing label of your new towels. This label will be found along the edge of one of your new towels. Some towels need to be washed in warm or cold water, or cannot be machine dried. Follow the washing instructions on the label so you don't damage your new towels.

  2. Separate your white and colored towels. The dyes in new towels transfer more easily into the wash, so your whites can eventually change color when you wash them with colored towels. Do two separate loads so your new towels will keep their color.
  3. Wash your new towels in their own load. Do not add clothes or other laundry to the machine, especially during the first wash. The dyes from the new towels can discolor your other laundry, or dyes in your clothes can stain your white towels.
  4. You can make the new towels retain their color better by washing them with a cup (240 ml) of natural vinegar. Pour the vinegar into the washing machine with the towels. Use half the normal amount of detergent. Then wash the towels in warm water (unless the label on the towels states that this should not be done). Wash your new towels this way for the first 2-3 washes.

Method 2 of 3: Dry new towels

  1. Put some air in your new towels before machine drying. Rub and shake the towels to make them more plump. After doing this, dry them in the machine on a regular setting.
  2. Machine dry your towels with a large piece of nylon gauze to remove any lint. When the dryer is running, the towels will hit the nylon mesh and lint will fall off. Nylon mesh can be found at a fabric store.
    • Make sure the lint trap in your dryer is cleaned before you dry your new towels.
  3. Let microfiber cloths air dry. Hang them on a clothesline or drying rack so that they dry completely and don't develop mold. Do not wash microfibre towels in the dryer or they will be damaged by the heat over time.
    • If you don't have a place to let microfiber cloths air dry, machine dry them on the lowest heat setting possible.
  4. Make sure your towels are completely dry before putting them away. Slightly damp towels can develop mold if they are folded or hung in a way that does not allow for further drying. Check your new towels when you take them out of the dryer to make sure they are completely dry. If not, put them back in the dryer or air dry.
    • Be careful not to over dry your towels. Over-drying can damage the fibers in the towels.

Method 3 of 3: Make new towels last a long time

  1. Do not wash your new towels with fabric softeners and drying towels for the dryer. Fabric softeners and drying towels contain wax and chemicals that can damage the towels and make them less absorbent. It's okay to use fabric softeners and tumble dryers from time to time, but as little as possible.
  2. Wash your new towels every few days. Don't use your towels more than 3-4 times without washing them or they could develop bad odors and bacteria. Regular washing of your towels will keep them clean and fresh for longer.
    • Plan to wash your towels two days a week so that it is easy to remember.
  3. Clean your new towels with bleach, if necessary. Use color-safe bleach on your colored towels, and non-chlorine bleach on your white towels. Make sure to wash the towels separately so that the bleach doesn't get on your other laundry. Bleach will help remove stains from your new towels and can make your white towels look whiter.
