This wikiHow teaches you how to sort two or more columns of data based on a column in Google Sheets.

To step

  1. Open your Google Spreadsheet. Go to https://sheets.google.com in your browser, and click on your Spreadsheet.
    • To create a new spreadsheet, click Empty in the top left corner of the page.
    • If you are not logged in to your Google account, you will be asked to log in first with your Google email address and password.
  2. Select the columns you want to sort. Click and drag your mouse from the top cell in one column to the bottom cell in another column.
    • The columns you want to sort must be next to each other.
    • If you have opened a new spreadsheet, enter the information before continuing.
  3. click on Data. You can see this tab at the top of the sheet.
  4. click on Sort range . You will see this option in the middle of the drop-down menu.
  5. Select a column to sort by. Click the drop-down menu to the right of the "sort by" text, and select a column to use as the basis for the sort action.
    • For example, if there are names in column "A" and salaries in column "B", then select column "A" to sort by name and column "B" to sort by salary.
    • If the selected columns have a header in the first cell, check the "Data has a row of message headers" box here as well.
  6. Select an order. You can use ascending order (alphabetic / numeric) by pressing A → Z or clicking Z → A to sort in descending order.
    • If you want to add another sorting method, click on + Add another sort column. You can remove additional sorting methods by clicking the left of the method X to click.
  7. click on To sort. This ensures that all selected data is sorted according to the column of your choice.

Tips

  • Ascending order will sort numbers from smallest to largest (1, 2, 3) while descending order will sort numbers from largest to smallest (3, 2, 1).

Warnings

  • If there is an empty column between the two columns you want to sort, the option will Sort range gray and not clickable.
