Are you done with your default web browser? In most operating systems you can set your own browser to open links to websites. You must first install the new browser before you can set it as the default. You will have to jailbreak an iOS device to change the default browser. Fortunately, in most other operating systems, the process is quite simple.

To step

Method 1 of 6: Windows

  1. Open the Start menu and type "Default Programs" (or "Default apps" in Windows 10). To open the Start menu, you can click on the Start button or press ⊞ Win. You will now see the "Default Programs" option in the list of results.
  2. Open "Standard Programs". You will now be presented with a list of options to choose from.
  3. Click on "Set Default Programs". You now load a list of all programs on your computer. This loading may take a while.
  4. Select the browser you want to use. Scroll through the list on the left, and find the browser you want to set as the default browser. The browser must be installed first to be included in this list.
    • If you haven't installed the new browser yet, go to the browser's website and download the installer.
  5. Click on "Set this program as default". Windows will now configure your new browser to open all relevant extensions, links and shortcuts.

Method 2 of 6: OS X Yosemite (10.10)

  1. Click the Apple menu and select "System Preferences". In Yosemite, the default browser settings are in the "System Preferences" menu.
  2. Click on the "General" option. You will now be presented with a list of general system options.
  3. Click the "Default Browser" menu. Select the browser you want to use from the list of available browsers.
    • You must first install your new browser before you can select it.

Method 3 of 6: OS X Mavericks (10.9) and older

  1. Open Safari. Surprisingly, you have to open Safari first to be able to change your default browser.
  2. Click on the Safari menu and select "Preferences". You can also press ⌘ Command+,
  3. Click on the "General" tab. This is usually already open when you open the preferences.
  4. Click the "Default Browser" drop-down menu. Select the browser you want to set up from the list of available browsers.
    • You must first install your new browser before you can select it.
  5. Close Safari to save your changes. Your new browser is now the default browser for opening links.

Method 4 of 6: Android

  1. Open the Settings app. This app is on your home screen or in the app drawer.
  2. Open the option "Apps" or "Applications". You now open the Application Manager.
  3. Find the current default browser. Go to the "All" tab to see all your installed apps. Tap the browser to select it.
    • On most Android devices, the default browser is called "Browser" or "Internet".
  4. Scroll down and tap "Clear Default Settings". This browser is now no longer the default browser.
    • If the "Clear default settings" option is greyed out, you may not have another browser installed, or this browser may no longer be a default browser.
  5. Tap a link to a website. Open an app where you can find a link to a website, such as an email message. You will now see a window in which you can choose a browser to open the link with.
  6. Tap your new browser and then tap "Always". All links you tap from now on will be opened in the new browser.

Method 5 of 6: iOS

  1. Understand the process. You cannot change the default browser in iOS. So the only way to do this is to jailbreak your device - removing Apple's restrictions on the device. This will void your warranty anyway, and it is not recommended if you only want to adjust the default browser. Jailbreaking is for power users, and it can break your device.
    • Read about jailbreaking to learn more about jailbreaking an iOS device.
  2. Install Google Chrome. With this trick you can set Chrome as your new default browser. Chrome can be downloaded for free from the App Store.
  3. Open Cydia. To install this modification you will need to open Cydia. This is the package manager for jailbreaks.
  4. Search for "Open in Chrome". This package should be easy to find in the results list. The author is Andrew Richardson.
  5. Tap "Install" and then "Confirm". Cydia will now download and install the package. This usually doesn't take long.
  6. Tap "Restart Springboard". Your device will now reboot and the changes have been made.
  7. Tap a link. Links you tap should now open in Chrome instead of Safari.

Method 6 of 6: Ubuntu

  1. Click on the Gear icon in the top right corner and select "System Settings". This will open the "System Settings" window.
  2. Select "Details" in the "System" section. You will now see your system information.
  3. Click on the "Default Programs" option. You will now open a list of the standard applications for important system functions.
  4. Click the "Web" drop-down menu. You will now see a list of available browsers. The browser must be installed first to be included in this list.
  5. Select the browser you want to use. Your new settings are automatically saved. All links will now be opened by your selected browser.
