By logging in to your router you connect yourself to the home network and the world around you. It might be a bit confusing at first, but remember: 192.168.1.1 is the magic number. We will explain:

To step

  1. Turn off the device. When everything is still connected, unplug the Linksys router and the modem.
  2. Connect your computer to the router. Connect an Ethernet cable from the computer to the yellow Port 1 on the back of the router.
  3. Connect your router to the modem. Connect a second Ethernet cable from the blue Internet port to the Ethernet port on the modem.
  4. Turn on the modem. Put the plug back in the modem and wait for the modem to boot. This can take from 30 seconds to a minute.
  5. Turn on the router. This too can take a minute or so. When all the lights have stopped blinking, you are ready to continue.
  6. Open a web browser. Type "192.168.1.1" in the address bar.
  7. Hit enter or return. Now you will be taken to the Linksys router page.
  8. Fill in a password.
    • The default username is usually empty, or "admin". The default password is "admin".
    • If you have already changed the password, you must enter your own password instead of "admin".
  9. Repeat if necessary. That's all you have to do.

Tips

  • Enter the password and username in lower case.

Warnings

  • Change your password as soon as possible, because everyone knows what the default password is. Especially in the case of a WiFi router.
