This wikiHow shows you how to use a non-Apple iPhone charger to charge your iPhone. The only reliable way to get a third-party cable to charge your phone is to buy an MFi-certified cable.

Method 1 of 2: Buy a cable from another brand

1. Search for certified MFi cables. MFi stands for Made For iDevices and these cables are certified by Apple to work with your iOS device, even if they are not made by Apple itself. With MFi certified cables, your iOS device will not stop charging when you use them.
   • While MFi cables are cheaper than Apple cables, they don't come cheap.
2. Look for the "Made for" certificate. This is shown somewhere on the packaging of the cable you want to purchase; it is written "Made for" followed by the iOS devices it supports (eg, iPhone, iPad, iPod) and their respective silhouettes. If you see neither "MFi" in the cable title nor the "Made for" certificate anywhere on the package, the cable will not work with your iPhone.
   • If you are shopping online and you cannot see the packaging, it is best to email the supplier for more information.
3. Read the user reviews. When recent reviews state that the cable will no longer work with a new version of iOS, the cable will likely not be usable.
   • In a specialized store, it is best to ask to speak to the technical department or customer service.
4. Find the serial number of the MFi cable. When you see positive reviews outside of the website or store where you found the cable, you can buy it safely. Otherwise, keep looking for a certified MFi cable.
   • Some MFi cables that work with some version of iOS will stop working when your iPhone is updated. Therefore, try to buy a cable that has been manufactured recently.

Method 2 of 2: Turn off your iPhone

1. Connect the cable to your iPhone. If the cable does not support the cable, the following message should appear on your screen: "This cable or accessory is not certified and does not guarantee reliable operation with this iPhone."
2. Press OK. This will clear the message.
3. Press and hold the lock button. After a few seconds, a slider will appear at the top of the screen with the message "slide to turn off".
4. At the top of the screen, slide the slider to the right. This will turn off the iPhone. In some cases, the phone will start charging when it is turned off because the software limitations that prevent the cable from being recognized are no longer active.
5. Turn on your phone after ten minutes. To do this, press and hold the lock key until the white Apple icon appears on the screen. If your iPhone's battery life has increased, turn your phone off again and let it charge for a few hours.
   • Depending on your iPhone's operating system and cable type, this method may not work. In that case you have to buy a certified MFi cable.

Tips

• Most MFi cables have the names of the supported iPhone models in the description. Please double check that the cable is compatible with your iPhone model before purchasing.
• You can try to bypass your iPhone's software locks by jailbreaking your iPhone, but there are significant risks involved. Just consider getting a cheaper certified MFi cable.
