If you found an image on the internet that you like but don't know how to link to it, don't worry! It is quite easy to copy the URL of an online image. You can then paste this link anywhere, on your blog, forum posts, email, etc.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Copy the URL of images on the web

  1. Look for the image from which you want to copy the web address. It is possible to copy the internet address of most images that you find online.
  2. Make sure you have the original version of the image open. Some websites show a scaled-down version instead of the full image. If you copy the URL from there, then you have nothing but the address of the icon. Make sure the full size of the image is loaded in your browser.
    • For example, the images in this wikiHow article are essentially scaled down versions. For the full versions, you will have to click on the image to open it in a new window.
  3. Right-click (computer) on the image or press and hold the image (mobile). When you have found an image that you want to copy the link from, right-click it if you have a computer or press and hold the image on a mobile device.
    • If you work with a Mac with one mouse button, hold Ctrl and click the image to open the context menu.
    • If you are unable to right-click on the image, click here.
  4. Select the option "Copy image address". Depending on your browser, this option will have a different name:
    • Chrome (computer) - "Copy image address"
    • Chrome (mobile) - "Copy Image URL"
    • Internet Explorer - "Copy"
    • Safari (iOS) - "Copy" (Note: This only works if the image is not a link. If the image is a link to another page, Safari will not get the URL)
    • Safari (OS X) - "Copy Image Address"
    • Firefox - "Copy Image Location"
  5. Copy and paste the URL of the image. Once you have copied the URL of the image, it will end up in the Clipboard. From there you can copy it anywhere you want, such as a message, document or the address bar in your browser. If you copy anything else before pasting it, the copied URL will be overwritten by the last item you copied.

Method 2 of 3: Upload images and get a URL

  1. Decide which image upload service you want to use. If you want to give one of your images a URL, you can send it to an image hosting website and copy the web address. This article mainly focuses on Imgur as it is one of the simpler solutions that you don't need an account for. There are a number of different free image hosting options available, including:
    • Imgur
    • Flickr
    • TinyPic
    • Shutterfly
  2. Click on the "Upload images" button. If you use Imgur, you will find this button at the top of the page.
  3. Add the images you want to upload. You can search your computer for images and then drag them in the window, or copy and paste them.
    • If you use the Imgur app for your mobile, you will first have to create an account.
  4. Click on the "Start Upload" button. The images will be uploaded from your computer to Imgur's website.
  5. Locate the folder "Share this Image". Click the "More" link to expand it.
  6. Copy the web address "Direct Link". This address will send you directly to the image you uploaded. You can then send, share and embed it as desired.

Method 3 of 3: Searching for the URL of the image on more complex websites

  1. Open the website in Chrome or Safari. If you are unable to right-click on the image, it is probably protected by code. To find this address, you need a developer tool, such as in Chrome or Safari. You can also do this with Firefox if you have the Firebug add-on installed.
  2. Open the Developer Tool. Press Ctrl+⇧ Shift+I./⌘ Command+⇧ Shift+I. to open the Web Inspector. This will open a new frame in the browser with the code from the website.
    • You can quickly find the listing by right-clicking on the image and then selecting "Inspect".
  3. Look for the listing of the image. While scrolling through the site's code, you will see various elements that are highlighted. Find the part that emphasizes the image you want to copy.
  4. Look for the address of the image in the "Styles" section. If you hover your mouse cursor over the link, you will see an example. Find the link to the image for which you want to find the web address.
  5. Right-click on the link and select Copy link location. This will copy the URL of the image to your clipboard. You can test the link by copying it to the address bar (in a new tab) of your browser.

Tips

  • If you want to use an image that was taken by someone else, first get the permission of the creator and make sure to indicate what or who the source is next to the image, otherwise you risk a lawsuit.
