Metal mesh watch straps are a popular option for both men's and women's watches. Although these watches work a little differently than watches with leather or metal straps, you can easily adjust the mesh watch band with a flat screwdriver. Slide the clasp on the lower part of the mesh watchband so it fits comfortably on your wrist.

To step

Part 1 of 2: Opening the buckle

  1. Use a small flat screwdriver. You will need a small, pointed object to pry the mesh fastener off. You can make good use of the type of screwdriver used to tighten the lens screws. A Phillips screwdriver will not work because it is too large and therefore does not fit in the clasp.
    • If you don't have a small screwdriver, you can also use other small, blunt tools. For example, try one of the handy built-in functions of a Swiss Army knife.
    • Do not use a knife point. The tip of the blade could cause the watch to slip and scratch the watch, or you could accidentally cut your fingers on the blade.
  2. Hold the clasp firmly. Place the watch flat on a table or other solid surface. Use your non-dominant hand to hold the buckle firmly in place.
    • If you are not near a table, it is possible to adjust the clasp while holding the watch in your hand. However, if it's your first time adjusting a mesh watchband, it will be easier on a table.
  3. Insert the screwdriver into the small hole in the clasp. The front of the clasp (which faces up when the watch is facing up) has a small hole in the center about 6mm wide. You use this hole to pry open the closure. Insert the tip of your screwdriver - or other tool - directly into the hole.
    • The hole will have a different shape and size depending on the brand of metal strap you are adjusting.
    • Some closures even include a small arrow pointing to the hole.
  4. Pry the clasp up to open it. There will be some small hinges on the bottom of the watch buckle, on the side closest to the watch face. Slowly apply pressure on the screwdriver to pry up and open the top part of the clasp.
    • If the clasp does not open completely with the screwdriver, use your thumb and index finger to open it completely.

Part 2 of 2: Adjusting the clasp

  1. Slide the clasp up or down the watch strap. adjust the clasp so that it fits your wrist. If you slide the clasp further up on the watch strap (towards the watch), the strap will tighten around your wrist and if you slide the clasp down the watch strap (away from the watch), the strap will loosen.
    • Be careful not to drop the clasp on the floor.
  2. Adjust the watch strap by tightening the clasp on one of the notches in the strap. The Mesh watch strap has different positions. Every 3 mm contains a small groove. The back of the clasp has a matching notch that fits exactly into these grooves.
    • If you try to close the clasp without first aligning it with a slot in the watchband, the clasp will not close.
  3. Close the clasp. When you've found the best fit for the watchband and aligned it with a groove in the mesh watchband, close the clasp to lock it in place. You should hear a "pop" sound when the clasp snaps shut.
    • At that moment the watch is ready to be worn.
