If you don't want to damage your walls or live in a rental home where adjustments aren't allowed, you might think you can't hang curtains. Fortunately, there are a few easy ways to hang curtains without drilling holes in the walls. You can hang curtains with adhesive hooks or with a clamping bar without using a drill.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Using adhesive hooks

  1. Buy adhesive hooks that can support the weight of your curtains. Adhesive hooks come in a variety of weight capacities, and you need to make sure the hooks you have are strong enough to hold your curtains and curtain rod so that they don't fall. In general, adhesive hooks should hold up to about 7kg.
    • You will need two adhesive hooks for each pair of curtains you wish to hang.
    • Adhesive hooks are sold online or at a DIY store.
    • Since you are using two adhesive hooks, each hook only needs to support half the weight of the curtains. For example, if the curtains and curtain rod weigh 14 kg in total, you will need two adhesive hooks that can each hold a weight of 7 kg.
    • Many brands of adhesive hooks have stylized versions made of steel or wood instead of plastic. Choose these variants if you care about the aesthetics of your curtains.
  2. Cut a right angle from a piece of cardboard. Draw a square at least 5 cm wide in the corner of the piece of cardboard. Then cut it out to create a right angle.
    • You use the right-angled piece of cardboard to indicate where you want to hang the adhesive hooks so that they are level.
  3. Line up the cardboard with the corner of the window and mark the bottom of a hook on it. The corner of the window should line up with the right angle you cut from the cardboard. Hold one of the adhesive hooks on the cardboard where you want to hang it and mark the bottom of it with a pencil.
  4. Push a pencil through the mark on the cardboard to mark the wall. Line up the cardboard with the corner of the window as you pierce it with the pencil. You want the mark on the wall to be directly behind the mark on the cardboard.
    • At the same time, try to turn and press the pencil to pierce the cardboard.
  5. Turn the cardboard over and mark the same spot in the other corner of the window. Line up the right angle on the cardboard with the other side of the window and make a mark through the hole you punctured with the pencil.
    • Now you should have a mark on each side of the window showing you where to hang the adhesive hooks. The markings must be level.
  6. Align the hooks with the marks and press for 30 seconds. Remove the adhesive strip from the back of the hooks and press them firmly to the wall so that the marks you made line up with the bottom of the hooks.
    • Make sure to press the hooks for 30 seconds so that the glue sticks.
  7. Let the glue on the hooks dry for at least 30 minutes. The glue on the hooks takes time to dry before it is properly set. If you hang the curtains on the hooks too quickly, they can fall.
    • The exact time you have to wait can vary depending on the type of adhesive hooks you are using. Refer to the packaging for specific instructions.
  8. Put the curtain rod in the hooks and test how tight it is. The curtain rod must be perfectly balanced on the hooks. If it slides or tilts in one direction, the hooks may not be level. Remove one of the hooks and check that the marks are level.
  9. Thread the curtain onto the curtain rod and hang it up. Thread the curtain rod through the rings at the top of the curtains and then hang it up again. Pull the curtains closed and let them sit for an hour to make sure the adhesive hooks can support the weight.
    • If the curtain falls, then the glue is not fully attached to the wall or it is too heavy for the hooks. Consider buying hooks that can support more weight, or use two adjacent hooks on each side to distribute the weight a little better.

Method 2 of 2: Set up a clamping bar

  1. Measure from one side of the window to the other. Start at the inside edge of the window frame and measure to the opposite inside edge to get the width of the window. You use the width to purchase the right size clamp rod for your curtains.
  2. Buy a clamp bar that fits in your window. Clamp rods have a spring mechanism on the inside that creates tension when the ends of the rod are pressed against a window frame. If the bar is too short, there will not be enough tension, and if the bar is too long, there will be too much tension. Clamping rods generally have a window size on the package, so look for one that is appropriate for the width of your window.
    • You can buy clamp bars online or at a DIY store.
    • For particularly heavy curtains, you may want to use adhesive strips instead of a clamp bar. A clamping bar is best for small light curtains.
  3. Adjust the clamp bar so that it is slightly longer than the width of the window. The correct way to adjust the length of the clamping bar depends on the model you are using, but generally you will have to pull or turn the bar. Make sure the clamping bar is slightly longer than the width of the window so there is enough tension to hold it in place.
    • If you are unsure of how to adjust the length of the clamping bar, refer to the instructions that come with it.
  4. Put the rod in the window frame and mark where each end is. Draw a circle with a pencil around the ends of the clamp bar where it will be pressed into the door frame. Use a spirit level to make sure the rod is even before drawing the circles.
  5. Lower the rod and hang the curtains on it. Slide the rings or closures of the curtains onto the rod. Make sure all the panels you want to use are on and are pointing in the right direction, as you would have to lower the clamping bar back down to adjust them.
    • If the curtains have clips instead of rings, you don't have to pull down the clamp bar to hang them.
  6. Hang the clamp bar and curtains. Insert the clamp bar into the frame so that the ends line up with the marks you made earlier. If the bar does not feel tight, you may need to take it down and adjust it so that it is longer and has more tension.

Tips

  • For a more dramatic look, position the rod near the ceiling and use floor-length curtains.
  • Measure from the curtain rod to the bottom of the window to find the correct curtain length.
  • You can also use glue to attach hooks to the wall instead of buying specialty hooks, but keep in mind that you'll have to dissolve the glue later or use a razor blade to get it off the wall. Do not use superglue or regular school glue, but opt for craft glue, because it holds everything together well and can be easily dissolved or scraped off.

Warnings

  • Be careful hanging the curtain rod in case it falls.
