Torrent files are one of the most popular ways to share files online, and with the right apps, you can use them on your Android device just as easily as on a computer. You may need to download other apps to access the files you download. It is wise to download torrents via a WiFi network so that you do not use up your mobile data.

Part 1 of 2: Downloading torrents

1. Understand what you can download. Torrents allow you to download almost any type of file, but not all types of files will be able to open on your Android device. For example, downloading an EXE file makes no sense, because this is a file type that only works on Windows. You can of course transfer it to your computer to use it, but on Android you cannot open it.
   • You can play most media files if you install a media player such as VLC.
   • APK files can be installed on your Android device as applications.
   • You may need a special app to extract compressed files.
   • You can still download a file that doesn't work on Android with your device, and then transfer it to a computer for use.
2. Connect to a WiFi network. Torrents can use a huge amount of data, so it is recommended that you connect your Android device to a wireless network before downloading. This way you can be sure that you do not exceed your subscription and have to pay extra. In addition, downloading via WiFi is often faster.
3. Download and install a torrent app from the Google Play Store. In order to download torrents on your Android device, you need a torrent client that can open the torrent file and connect your device to other users. Popular free torrent apps are:
   • Flud
   • μTorrent
   • BitTorrent
   • tTorrent
4. Open the torrent app before downloading a torrent file. It is best to adjust a few settings before you start downloading.
5. Open the settings menu. The exact process differs from app to app. You usually open the menu by tapping ⋮ or ☰, then "Settings".
6. Find the section "Bandwidth". Here you can adjust your upload and download speed. This can be especially useful if you want to download torrents on a 4G network. If you only want to download over Wi-Fi, you usually don't have to worry too much about limiting your speeds.
   • In μTorrent, in this section you can set the app to download only when you are connected to a WiFi network. In Flud, you can find the Wi-Fi settings in the "Power Management" section.
7. Set your download location. In the "Storage" menu you can set the folder where your downloads will appear. Usually you can leave the default setting for this.
8. Find a torrent file to download. Once you've set up your torrent app, you can start downloading a torrent file. Torrents can quickly consume a lot of data, so it is wise to connect to a Wi-Fi network before starting your download.
   • There are many different torrent websites, and they are rapidly changing due to their questionable legal status. You have the best chance if you enter your search term on Google, plus the word "torrent".
9. Tap the torrent you want to download. Select your torrent app from the list of apps that appears.
   • When choosing a torrent, make sure to always read the comments to make sure there is no virus in it.
   • Try to find torrents with many seeders. With more seeders, it is more likely that you will be able to make a good connection, and thus download the file faster.
   • If the torrent file downloads but you are not prompted to open it, you will have to open the file manually. Open the app drawer and choose "Downloads", or open a file manager and go to the Downloads folder. Tap the torrent file, then choose your torrent app from the list.
10. Confirm that you want to start the download. Before the download starts, you have the option to change the file name or choose a different download location. Tap on + to add the torrent to your download list.
11. Wait for your download to finish. The download speed will depend on the speed of your network and other environmental factors. The duration of the download will also depend on the file size. You can see the progress of your downloads in your torrent app.

Part 2 of 2: Opening the downloaded files

1. Understand how torrents deliver files. Torrents are simply a way to transfer any kind of file. This means that you may not be able to use the downloaded file without the correct app. For example, the RAR format is popular in torrents, but Android cannot unpack it itself. Fortunately, there are apps for opening almost any file type.
2. Download a file manager app. If you are going to download torrents, you will likely be moving files back and forth on your device much more often. So it can be useful to install a file manager if you don't already have one to find and manage your downloaded files quickly and easily. Popular file manager apps are:
   • ES File Explorer
   • Root Explorer
   • Cabinet
3. Download an archive or file explorer app to be able to open RAR files. To open a compressed RAR file you need a special app. Several archive apps can open these files, as can some popular file explorer apps.
4. Download a media player app to play media files such as MKV. Many video files you download will be in MKV format. Your default video player probably won't be able to play these files. A few popular free media players are:
   • VLC for Android
   • MX Player
5. Adjust your device's security settings to install APK files. If you download an Android app via a torrent, you can install it by adjusting the security settings to allow third-party apps. Make absolutely sure you can trust the app as it is the easiest way to get a malware infection.
   • Open the Settings app and tap "Security".
   • Select the option "Unknown sources" and confirm that you want to enable it.
   • Navigate to your Downloads folder and tap the APK file. Follow the instructions to install the app.

Warnings

• It is illegal in most places to download content that you do not own the rights to.
• Some telephone companies restrict or even prohibit torrent traffic on their network. So try to only download torrents over WiFi networks.
