Are you exploring an ocean-based biosphere in Minecraft, or do you want to travel along a long river without having to worry about navigating unfamiliar territory? Crafting a boat only requires a few basic materials, and it can be a huge help in your exploration. See Step 1 below to learn how to make a boat in Minecraft.

Method 1 of 2: Create a boat

1. Gather your materials. You will need 5 wooden planks of any type of wood, and they do not all have to be from the same type of tree. You get 4 wooden planks from 1 block of wood. Logs of wood are obtained by cutting down trees, from NPC villages or can sometimes be found in Mine Shafts.
2. Place your wood planks in the workbench grate. Arrange them as follows:
   • Place 3 wooden planks in the bottom row of the grid.
   • Place 1 wooden plank on the left, in the middle row.
   • Place the last wooden plank on the right, in the middle row.
   • All other boxes must be left empty.
3. Build the boat. You can immediately add the boat to your inventory by dragging it to one of the bottom boxes, or by holding down Shift and clicking on it.

Method 2 of 2: Launch the boat

1. Launch your boat. Find a calm spot in the water, select your boat from the inventory and right click on the water. Your boat is placed. If the water is a trickle, it will float with the flow.
   • A boat can also be placed on land by right clicking. You can also steer a boat on land, but it will move very slowly.
   • The boat can be placed on lava, but it will break if you try to board it.
2. Get on board. Right click on the boat to board. You can do this from any direction, including from below, after diving. Press the left Shift key to disembark.
3. Drive the boat. The boat will move in any direction depending on where your mouse cursor is while you hold down the W key. Clicking on S will turn the boat around quickly.
   • Boats are very fragile and break easily when hit by something. If a boat broke after a collision, it will drop 3 wooden planks and 2 sticks. If the boat is destroyed by an attack, it will drop a boat.
   • You can sprint if you want the boat to speed up.

Tips

• When you push a boat over snow, the snow melts.
• Speed ​​effects can make a boat move faster.
• Boats move with the flow or are controlled by the player.
• These steps work for both the PC and console versions of Minecraft. Boats are not available in the Minecraft Pocket Edition.
• Being entities, boats behave in the same way as mine carts off the track. This means that you can place them, as solid blocks, on top of other players, mobs or other boats. Players, mobs and other entities can also stand on top of boats themselves.
• You can use doors to keep boats from drifting with the current. This is essential for the construction of quays and canals.
